quake 2 sp pak file downloads...starting them on macs

Forgive my stupidity but I've been downloading q2sp maps and playing them,
the problem is that the larger maps are all pak files so you cant chuck them
into your maps folder. I've followed the instructions that come with the pak
files but can't seem to make them work. Is this a mac/pc thing or am i
simply doing something wrong. If someone could take a minute to explain the
correct procedure for opening these pak files on a mac i would appreciate it
