I just tried Quake 4. My old Gforce 2 is no longer enough. What cards

Nvidia 6800 oc (256meg), runs fine with everything except ultra
quality

Gforce2? don't make me laugh. I don't think you can play Q4 @ 3fps.

ATI X700 PCIe 256mb here, $200.00 US at BestBuy just about a year ago when I
put my P4 rig together.
Best Bang for the buck then.
Just finished Q4 and the lowest frame rate I saw was 17fps with 40-60fps
being the average through the game at high settings @ 1024x768.

As always for the legendary game of Quake, Great Game!

Well coded only one bug/freezeup, maybe sound drivers.
Use's less cpu & runs cooler than FarCry, DOOM3 COD etc. IMO.
Maps are a little slow to load even with SATA 10,000rpm drives, but no
worries, just glad I'm not loading them with ATA100 7200 drives. ;-)

Now I'll just have to wait 5 years till I can afford a computer that can run
it @ 1600x1200 in ultra video mode w/160+fps.

BTW three direct blasts with the shotgun takes out those flying skirt
thingies.

6800GT 256m AGP it's good, but Q4 could push on even more :)

X800XT PE - runs everything on high with 2AA and 4AF. Haven't tweaked any
game settings yet so might be able to get better out of this card

That's not bad. I once fired up Tribes 2 on my colocated Linux server over
an X Windows session, so all the rendering had to go over the Internet via
my cable modem. I think I got 3 frames per *minute*. What was interesting
was that it worked at all, to run a FPS game across multiple state lines!

I've got Q4 loaded on the same colo. (It's running the "(MA) Blame Canada"
arena CTF server.) I'll bet if I copied my nVidia DLL's to it, it would
attempt to run with my display at home. Might be fun to leave a timedemo
running overnight. ;)

Just the thing I expect from a Linux user. Poor attempt at humor and a
very poor attempt at an OS.

We don't have to run faster than the bear. We just have to run faster than
Windows.

LOL! You're a moron. Go buy some more antivirus or anti-spyware
software, or whatever it is that you WinFools do.

I wasn't kidding about the video card, either. Works great for me.

I guess Linux is ok for people that are not interested in running
software. Do a little web browsing and run the fraction of software
that is written for Linux. I guess you don't need much hardware to do
that.

You are the moron. I live in the real world.

I run LOTS of software. Get a clue.

Is that all that you think Linux can do? Are you really saying that (in
public), because if you are, it shows you for the fool you are.

Right. Let me guess.... you want to try Linux (or already have tried),
but can't figure it out, so you bad-mouth it without really knowing
anything about it. There isn't anything you can do in Windoze that I
can't do in Linux.

Don't talk about what you don't know. It makes you look stupid.

Linux is like a bicycle. It will get you around. Windows is a like a car, it
will take you a lot farther.

Registered linux users are like people that have lost their driver's
licenses, so now they hate cars. I find it quite amusing. :)

No, Linux is like a sports car, while Windows is like the family Buick.
When the Buick breaks, you have no idea what's wrong and have to take it to
a dealer because the engine computer is sealed shut and undocumented. But
it's easy to drive and maintain, if you can afford it. The sports car is
lean and fast and easy to fix, if you're willing to figure out the service
manual. All parts of the engine, including the computer, are completely
open and you *can* figure out what's wrong. And you can bolt on an off-road
kit, in case you want to go somewhere the Buick is incapable of.

Sad but true... I'd switch to Linux if my ISP provided for connecting via
it, and all the software, games etc, that I run on a daily basis, had Linux
binaries.

It's not that you can't, but that they don't "support" it. Ie. they won't
hold your hand. Surprisingly, Comcast hosts a Unix web forum for people
running Linux and BSD. It's not official but there's some sympathetic
Comcast people there.

Some routers secretly run Linux inside. Notably the Linksys WRT54G and
WRT54GS. Linksys provides the source on its website and 3rd parties have
extended it to add more features. So if you use a Linksys to connect to
your ISP, you're already using Linux.

Linux is a great OS for "appliances" like routers and TiVos. In addition to
scaling up to server-class equipment, it can be trimmed way down to fit in
a very small amount of memory (by present day standards), and it doesn't
need a keyboard and display to function. You can sorta do that with NT
(XP's core, available for embedding), but I'm sure it's nowhere near as
scalable.

It should be quite straightforward to take Id's Linux builds for various
games and build a dedicated console, perhaps for use in cafes or on
airplanes. You could boot them from CDROM, so they reset to ground zero
when the customer is done with them. Try doing that with Windows. (Yeah,
you can use PE Builder, but MS doesn't like that.)

The Gentoo live games cd did that - on the client side. They got legally

LoL, how funny i have the wrt54gs and i flashed it to an other FW,
lololol. Still he didnt answer how he cant connect/use i-net with
linux...coz its lame to say this, but 80%++ i-net thingies are *nix

Well, they don't support setting up their connection under Linux, I don't
know much about setting up an ADSL connection manually, and I'm not even
sure if my USB ADSL modem has Linux drivers.

(Linux still wouldn't run at least 80% of the games I play, or the chat
software I use to keep in touch with my long-distance fiancee.)

No, but I don't know how to set up ADSL connections by hand, or my ISP's
specific connection settings, or if Linux supports my USB ADSL modem.

Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, AIM, Diablo II, Pharaoh, Rome: Total War,
Outlook Express, LOTR: Battle for Middle-Earth, all the Age of Empires
games, Winamp, Black and White...

As far as I know, out of all the games I play, only the Dooms and the Quakes
have Linux binaries.

That's why I avoid USB modems. Ethernet ones don't need a driver. No alien
software to worry about on my PC (whether Windows or Linux) that could
interfere with other things.

USB is good for many things. Broadband modems isn't one of them. (I've read
the standard, and the datasheets on some USB chipsets. Right now I'm doing
Firewire driver work on Windows, and wish it was Linux so I could get
sources all the way down to the metal.)

Yeah, I knew the Ethernet ones were better... sadly, they're also more
costly, and the USB one came free with my ISP subscription, so... yeah. :)

Radeon 9700 pro here, the game is very playable at 1280x1024, not using
max settings. Probably could use max settings if I lower the resolution.
