how to install quake on WinXP

Quake1 (shareware CD) won't run on winXP. I've read to try glquake or
winquake, but neither of those will run unless I get my shareware quake
registered (I've got a key). Problem is registering quake will require
running quake and quake won't run on winXP. A small window pops up and
quickly goes away when I try to run quake. Compatibility mode doesn't help.

Any thoughts on getting quake 1 registered without actually running quake1?

For goodness' sake man!

Listen, whatever key you have, it is worthless. It's probably a virus.

Shareware Quake does not "unlock" with a key. It is not possible. The
difference between shareware Quake and registered Quake is about $20.
The difference between them is that registered Quake contains about two
and a half times as much stuff (Maps, sounds, models) which you are
never going to find with any key anywhere, ever - because the shareware
Quake simply does not have the files present.

As for XP, get a registered version (A CD that contains the whole game)
from your favorite software store, or from Ebay, and then run GLQuake or
WinQuake because these are Win32 executables for running Quake. If you
have the old Quake shareware CD, then call the provided phone number and
they should help you.

fyi the original release of shareware quake on CD in the US did require a key to
unlock the full game. this method was soon abandoned by id and was only used in
the US.

quake is a dos game and wont install or run on XP
either download the shareware version from id software
or use a dos boot disk providing your not using NTSF disks
or try extracting quake from the install files from memory winzip can extract it
even tho it's in the LHA format.

depending on how old your quake CD is you won't be able to unlock it to the full
game only the original US CD's release had an unlockable full game
and this method was soon abandoned.

glquake winquake etc wont run on the shareware version
if you do try glquake delete opengl32.dll from your quake dir
it's a opengl mini driver for 3dfx based cards only. which makes calls to glide
that's why glquake asks for glide on startup.

it'll prob be easier to buy a full version it's pretty cheap these days

Yep - I've got one of the originals that provided the installation (minus
the quakegl, etc. mods) that I used for years on my 200MHz Pentium.

do you have a lan with a win98 box, if so you could install on the 98box
then copy the quake dir to the xp box
