Here is some Actual, Factual information regarding id's upcoming release, codenamed Quake. this info is 99.99% guaranteed. Features. Full 3d engine (ala sector on sector) of course 3d models for use as characters sprites used for some effects (id will use sprites where it looks better than if it was 3d modeled eg, fire etc.) Sound effects, and a cd audio soundtrack composed by Trent Reznor of NiN. (the sound effects are sure going to rock!) (no midi soundtrack!) Network gameplay with somewhere near up to 200 people (just on networks though, that takes SPEED) Multiplayer using: Modem Dialups Networks Serial Link (aka poor man's network) TCP/IP is under consideration, but i doubt it, due to thespeed and instability of the protocol. I'm sure quake will eventually support the new cable-modems in development, providing receive bandwidth up to 36 megs a second! (though your system will only be able to handle between 300k/sec, to 10mb/s for now.) The ability to have people on different levels @ the same time in deathmatch Support for next generation 3d accelerators, but primarily boards using the Verite chipset. Support for next generation vr headsets Support for all VESA super VGA graphics modes, along with the basic 320x200 and some extensions to that eg, 320x400 A completely modular game design allowing the player to completely rewrite almost every extent of the game. A dialect of C, called quake C will be used. Its rumored that you could even program an enemy's AI using the language. Its a giant leap above hexen's scripts. Real Environmental physics (wind, ice, etc.) and Curved survaces hmm, that's all the main features i can recall right now. a few clarifications: # There is no quake beta released, nor will there ever be one, well, not unless id decides to release one. (no chance!!!!) any posts you see with people saying "i just saw it at best buy, i almost pissed in my pants!!" just fucking ignore... # There WILL be a shareware release. # Quake server software will be 100% free. # System requirements will be 1 STEP ABOVE THAT OF DOOM'S. You will not need a top-of-the-line pentium pro 250mhz system to play it well. The MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS will probably be Ibm Pc 486dx2/66mhz w/ 8megs ram mouse, keyboard, etc... # Versions MS-DOS (of course) Win95 (guaranteed) Mac (most likely) Playstation (most likely) etc. # Quake will run best on a system with a Verite 3d accelerator. That will allow it to EASILY run at resolutions of 800x600 with 32,000 colors with framerates at 30+. Creative labs' next generation 3d blaster is planned to use the chipset, as well as a board from #9. Quake will probably take advantage of ALL 3d accelerators released, at least the ones using microsoft's direct 3d standard, since all the new cards will be based around that, as well as quake.(not 100% sure on that last part though, as ms is late producing the sdk for direct 3d) ID is expected to release quake sometime in April. But, well I doubt it. It usually takes 3 or 4 setbacks...:( and don't forget, ID WILL RELEASE IT WHEN ITS DONE, not when we tell them its done. Feel free to respond to any of this. (no emails, they won't be seen) ** Blue Wave 95! 1.0 ************************************* catch the wave @ ftp://there.is.no.fuckin.quake.beta.com/pub/games/quake/beta/bwave95.zip "uhm yah :\ n' stuff or something" - Evergreen of LH Systems Someone who actually knows what the hell he's talking about re: Quake

Haven't you been listening to anything? Don't you know anything? I have
two words for you 'coaxial cable'. Hopefully you can muster the brain
power to figure it out there...

: TCP/IP is under consideration, but i doubt it, due to thespeed : and instability of the protocol. There are workarounds. Have you heard of AlphaWorld - it uses vector motion technology instead of (X,Y,Z) position updates, and due to its predictive logic, its lag time is SHORTER than the lag time of the network itself. Due to hints in Quake rumors, I belive iD software is using this approach. While there will be slightly more erratic movements over the Internet in Quake - as is the problem with predictive vector motion systems, which degrade when lag time increase. (iD did say network data would degrade, which suggests the use of this technology). Lag time should be very small in Internet Quake, a lot less than using IHHD in DOOM for example (Internet Head to Head Daemon program) For more info on AlphaWorld, connect to www.worlds.net/alphaworld/ Make sure you have a Pentium 90 with 16MB to use it, though! You'll be impressed at its buildable, shared world, currently with about 16,000 members....Sort of like a huge DOOM wad built by 1000 people....Unfortunately you can only see 30 meters ahead, since the 3D layout data is stored on the server.. : I'm sure quake will eventually support the new cable-modems : in development, providing receive bandwidth up to : 36 megs a second! (though your system will only be able to : handle between 300k/sec, to 10mb/s for now.) It's 36 mega BITS per second, not 36 megabytes per second. Otherwise, you are talking about 288 megabit per second cable modems, which have not been invented ( 8 bits = 1 byte ) On top of that, cable modems are shared networks. There will be many network segments (sorta like Ethernet) for now, so if 100 users are using the same segment as you are on at the same time, you only get 1/100th the speed...like 360 kilobit per second. I've read this in several telecommunications magazines, and through my job. Still, a lot faster than telephone modems! Mark

Wow Horedump, as I read your postings I am overtaken by a sense of sparkling clarity.... It is clear you do not know what you are talking about. 1. Local cable companies are starting to offer internet access through their existing cable infrastructure. Using the correct adapter, you can connect with speeds of at least 10mbps.This could easily be increased. This service is currently availiable in some areas of Lansing, MI and will undoubtedly expand as cable companies get bought out by large telecom companies. 2. Real-time gaming over the internet as we know it will NEVER be feasible because of the lag times involved. This will not be much of an issue because many access providers are offering dial-up 28.8 and ISDN access so you can play locally (Concentric is one. By local I mean a 300 mile radius minimum) 3. You do not have to be rich to get ISDN. Rates are under $40 a month for 2b+d access in most areas and prices will continue to drop as usage increases. ISDN modems can be had for under $300 (Motorola's Bitsurfer) and NT1's that allow you to plug in a serial cable as well as an analog phone are under $500 (remember, with this last option you would no longer need standard POTS) ISDN is availiable in most urban areas and will rapidly expand (It will probably never get to the log you are under, Horedupe.) Read some books instead of rolling and smoking them Hordur.
