I'm a little new at this and I don't understand a lot of what you guys are talking about but apparently quake is supposed to be a great game. I.ve read a lot in this newsgroup and everyone is arguing over which games is better and almost everyone agrees that quake should be good. However I have yet to hear from anyone - friends and quake enthusiastes(?) alike - what this quake game is like. Is it a Heretic type game or doom2 type game? Good? maybe, but I'd really like to know a little more about before I agree or disagree. Anyone?

I just read what people say here in this newsgroup for amusement. Don't believe what anyone says, because noone knows anything ! Nobody has ever played this game, and nobody will ever play it until you can buy it at the store (well, we cant be sure, remember Doom II, AHEM !) Don't send people at id questions about quake, cause you won't be answered ! The ONLY thing that can be trusted is : The Id Software WWW Page with screen shots http://www.idsoftware.com/qss.html and The Id Software Fingerhelp http://www.idsoftware.com/cgi-bin/fingerhelp Happy anticipation, Joe

Quake is a new game by id software.
Although still in development, id has released lot of
information on it.
Unlike Doom, Hexen or Doom2, Quake will use true 3d engine.
ie: In doom, it was impossible to have one floor above another,
or a bridge that you could walk under. (exept for glitter
bridges in hexen which were objects, not part of map). That
was because doom engine was not really 3d. Also, no tilted floors
or ceilings or walls. Quake will have all of those.
In addition, quake will have underwater action, you will be
able to go under the water and kill things under water. Things
will react differantly under water... When things die, they will
float to surface instead of falling down at 9.8m/s. You will also
be able to hide under water, so you can see them, shoot them etc.
One major improvement in quake is that it will have true 3d objects.
In doom, whaven, cybermage, hexen and all other games up to now,
were made using bitmap objects. 8 bitmaps for an object, with shots
taken from different angle. Depending on where you looking at it,
the engine shows one of the eight angle shots. Every time they look
the same. In Quake, the objects will be made using polygons. Simular
to descent, exept that here, objects will be made using +200 polygons
instead of +20 like in descent. Also, depending on where you hit
the thing, it will get heurt differently. You can cut their bodies,
shoot dead bodies to mutilate them even more (it will be possible to
cut someone's head off, and then play golf with that head, maybe)
The actions will look realistic since they will not be limited to
using bitmaps. (Ever noticed, dead bodies in doom ALLWAYS have
their feet facing you, and weapons are allways seen sideways?, that's
because they only have 1 picture for those, and no matter what angle
you are at, same bitmap is used, quake will not be limited to such
childish things)
It is not good business for id to admit it, but
quake will beat every doom clone out there, to death. That includes,
doom, hexen, wichaven, rise of the triad, cybermage, tekwar, power slave,
and that stupid game called duke nukem 3d wich has yet to come out.
Something simular happened when doom came out for the first time.
No one had ever seen such graphics, it made Wolf 3d, Blake stone, Rise
of the triad look like a museum piece.
Same will happen with the current 3d games and quake.
In few words: If you think quake looks like doom, you way off.
It's million times better.
In words of logic:
Premise 1 : Id software never made a bad game so far.
Premise 2 : Quake is made by id software.
Conclusion: Quake will be good.
Conclusion: Inductive, strong.
