In article <3j78t4$4...@eldborg.rhi.hi.is>, hor...@rhi.hi.is (Hordur Kvaran) says: >I thought Quake wouldn't have any hard-coding. If they are going to hard-code >it in some assembler how are they going to port it to different machines? > >Just my 2 cents worth... It could be that MA is going to be optimizing the DOS/Windows version of quake. No one (but iD) knows if quake is going to be DOS or Win95 but my guess is that it will be the DOS game to keep DOS games alive well after Win95 eventually arrives. I imagine that MA is going to write some very fast graphics routines for slower DOS machines. Slower in this case could mean 486. If iD comes through with all of the claims they have made people will need serious computing power to play. Remember, the server module will probably have a lot more computing power to work with and it might not even need to produce the complicated graphics that our client PCs will have to.
