Yes, it would be wonderful to run DOOM and QUAKE at a higher resolution. I've been programming graphics in VGA lately, and have been completely annoyed at the pixel-addressing scheme. Fast games need fast video access; unfortunately the _standard_ VGA modes require a read/modify/write process instead of the much faster simple write (which is available only in the 320x200x256 mode). Once you try to use the better, faster modes available in SVGA, you face the problem of "standards? we don't need no steenkin' standards!" It's way easier for id to write to 32x200x256 than to deal with the nonsense found at higher modes. It's not the best, but it's entirely acceptable. -- ______________/ ctdo...@rodan.acs.syr.edu \______________________________ Most people agree that the government is largely sluggish and ineffective.
