First, let me clear up a bit. this isn't a diatribe on cheap techniques. as far as i'm concerned, there is no such thing. well, except when mileena or kitana throws you three or four or five or til whenever you die times in the row or sonya players pull the infamous "sonya cheat" (spake in a lower, hushed, don't-say-it- too-loud-or-you'll-get-your-ass-kicked-in-the-arcade-we-don't-play- here-like-that tone of voice); but hey... i do have some peeves, however. i just wanted to know if anyone out there shares them: 1) people that don't even ASK you if they can join in; 'specially if both of you know they'll kick your ass... 2) people that smoke really bad-smelling cigarettes while you play. i keep thinking "gee, i wish i could escape this stench" and die... 3) people who consider everything you do to be cheap, and don't waste any time in telling you this. when you ask them something like "why IS it so cheap when i throw you?" they can't answer, or say something like "i can't block against that" to which i respond "DON'T LET ME NEAR YOU FUCKER!!!" and we get in a row and all dat booshee... so, guys, what do YOU think is cheap? throwing? nah; if there is a move for a throw, i think you should be able to use it. i think people just don't like to see themselves getting flung aroung like a rag doll, that's all. ah, the plebes... enough procrastinating for a night. i just want to thank those guys that are posting the ongoing moves list; you're all great. and i'm so glad to have FINALLY found a newsgroup that shares my mk inter- ests... --a canadian in training

Or even if they're even in skill with you, at least when I'm using Shang Tsung and "fatality-seeking." I can't use ST well against players yet. >2) people that smoke really bad-smelling cigarettes while you play. > i keep thinking "gee, i wish i could escape this stench" and > die... I find very little cheap in the game so far, save things like Raiden's throw that can be used four or five times in a row and CAN'T be stopped. (The girls' can't throw more than twice before you can get away, and only then if you're in a corner). Still, they can be avoided. And the computer came up with the ulimate throw counter. For those who don't know (at least in my versions), the computer CANNOT be thrown. You attempt to throw, EVEN WHEN THE COMPUTER IS FROZEN OR IN THE "FINISH HIM" DIZZY, and YOU will be thrown, not the computer. An interesting, if impossible and completely cheap computerized counter ... -- Svenster

One time I was playing MK against the computer, and I was doing pretty well (considering that I suck at fighting games). I had just beaten the fourth or fifth guy in a row without continuing, and had pulled off the fatality almost every time. Now, I WANTED to keep playing the computer, but some local expert walked up and put his money in without saying a word. I KNEW he would kick my butt, and I therefore knew that if I fought him I would lose, and then just leave, and not even bother to waste any more money trying to beat him. I knew my game was already over, and I just had to go through with playing to get it over with. Well, I got my butt kicked in two rounds as predicted, but right afterwards I was hit with a feeling of I-just-thought-of-something-I- could-have-done-but-its-too-late-now-so-I'll-do-it-next-time. I thought of the perfect thing to do to annoy someone who joins in without asking, and you know he will beat you: As soon as he puts his money in and presses start, or as soon as he chooses a character, just walk away from the machine, and don't look back. Let him fight an inactive character for two rounds. He wanted a challenge from you, but he didn't ask, so don't give him one. Ok, so it's not the most evil thing you could do, but I think it would get your point across. -- _/ _/ _/ | Karl J. von Laudermann | _/_/ _/ _/ _/ | pen...@denali.ccs.neu.edu | _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ | ++ Old programmers never die; they just give up | _/ _/ _/ _/_/_/ | their resources. ++ |

Here's a Mortal Kombat ethics question: IF it were 50 cents to start and 25 to continue, what if two people both put 50 cents in and played while someone waited in line to play the winner. But the guy who loses argues that continueing only costs 25 cents because his 50 cents started the game, therefor he should be able to continue until he doesn't want to any more. Who should get to play? Brian

I don't feel that the ethics of fighting games should override standard arcade ethics... If the guy at the machine has made it plain he wishes to stay there (with a dozen quarters on the glass or whatever) -- then I think the ball's in his court, regardless of whether he popped in 50 cents to begin with or not. Since it does violate the tradition of fighting games, I'm sure he'll get some fuming arcadians breathing down his neck and pressuring him to release his hold, but I don't feel that 'only the best should be allowed to play' (which is what happens if you don't let people continue their personal battles) especially when you consider that they basically play for free. The closest I've come to a confrontation of this sort was one night while a friend and I had a single elimination tournament (just between the two of us) on MK I. Someone else came up and wanted to join in, and we explained we had a competition going, and would be done in no more than 4 more games... Although he didn't get nasty about it, it was apparent that he felt this a violation of standard protocol. Since we weren't extreme, and he wasn't overly pushy -- things worked out fine. ---Xeno -- Gary L Snethen xe...@iastate.edu
