My impression of MK for SNES

I just purchased Mortal Kombat for the SNES and I must say when people were
complaining about the controls of the game, I was not inclined to believe them--until
now. I had played the beta (which I have learned was the finished product) a few
months ago and, at the time, I did not think the controls were bad. I guess because
of the excitement of playing Mortal Kombat months before it came out got to me. Oh
well.

I'm not the BEST MKster, but I play fairly well. Anyway, there were moves that I
could do with my favorite character, Raiden (Rayden to SNESers), in the arcade version
that are IMPOSSIBLE to do in the SNES version. When an opponent footswept me (which
left himself/herself open), I could give them a swift uppercut; in the SNES version,
they could have their face IN my face and I wouldn't be able to uppercut them.

Please don't get my overall impression of the game misconstrewed <sp?> with the above
statements. The graphics and sound weigh heavily enough to justify the $57.?? I spent
on the game. (In case you all don't know, MK can be purchased from Walmart at that
price!!)

I realize that this is NOT SFII (speaking of the original, I don't have the new one),
but CapCom was able to give great graphics and play control that rivaled that of the
arcade.

Anyway, MK's graphics were impressive. Just wish I could play the game with
Raiden/Rayden. It just isn't the same unless I can perform his fatality (whoops!!), I
meant Finishing Move. When I'm executing it, he just stands there; and when I finish
up the move with the punch button (I've tried both punch buttons), he either wacks 'em
upside the head or grabs 'em and throws 'em. I'm thinking when he grabs them, the
third "AWAY" I performed is still registering with the computer. Sigh, such sweet
sorrow.

Lastly, if anyone knows Raiden's (or however you spell his name) fatality (or however
you acknowledge the fatal blow), please let me know. In the arcade, it's an "easy"
one forward, three away, and high punch--at close range, of course!

Later,
Rodney F. Clay

You could be standing too close to your opponent when you do the
fatality (ACK...Finishing Move; far be it from me to oppose the mighty
Nintendo...:/ ). I haven't played the SNES version yet--or the Genesis
one, for that matter, although I plan on renting both systems and
finding out for myself which one's better--but I do know that in the
arcade version, you have to be standing just out of punch/throw range in
order for certain things (such as Raiden's Electroshock Fat--er,
Finishing Move; PC...you gotta hate it). If you're too close, you'll
end up bashing your opponent's face in instead of frying it off of his
skull.
BTW, you were right about the FM--it's Forward, Away, Away, Away
and High Punch. :)
