I dunno, Tarla.  Much of what we call art is actually damn hard word
demanding a LOT of repetitition and practice.  Music is the most obvious
example of this, but it's true of learning to draw too. And writing is in
fact hard work.

to six hours every day. Actually completing a painting is an enormous
amount of work.  How do these people manage to drive themselves to this

The dirty little secret that many of these people don't themselves realize
is not the difficulty in STARTING this hard work -- the real problem lies
in STOPPING. Over and over again we see the image of the artist obsessively
mastering his craft to the exclusion of everything else.  The artist who
forgets to eat is a commonplace. 

Some people discover that something -- drawing, writing, painting, poetry,
computer programming, driving a race car -- seems to be hard-wired into
their heads.  They don't do it effortlessly -- but they don't begrudge the
effort.
