Well, we got MKII in our campus arcade today, and I got to play most of the characters - some of them extensively. It seems that there are a few bugs that still need to worked out. First of all, at least three times, a person put 50
cents to challenge the champion and the computer did not register that there was a second player. The challenger would put in 50 cents, and then both players would get to the character selection screen. Sometimes when the challenger let his character selection "time out", the computer would just go on as if it was just a normal one-player game and there was never a second player.
Liu Kang is one nasty character. He has his basic moves from MK as well as the devastating, but funny looking bicycle kick. In MK, I would duck under Kang's fireballs, but in MKII, he has he crouching fireball, which has led me looking for another strategy.
Kung Lao has, in my opinion, the cheapest throw in the game. The computer
uses it very very often in one-player games. His teleport sucks because he appears too slow and then is an easy target. Those of you who have seen MKII should know about the throw I'm talking about - the one that takes off like 20-25 energy...
Cage looks weird and his moves are almost completely changed. Only played
him briefly while morphing Shang Tsung.
I started using Reptile when I got to the machine and I won my first few matches. The invisibility is pretty cool, but hard to maintain. I guess it just
takes practice. The opponent doesn't see you, but most of the time, I didn't know where I was either. The force ball takes a while to generate, abut the acid
spit is easy to do and fun to watch. Watch Reptile's face as he throws the
acid!
I didn't play Sub-Zero too often, usually only when morphing with Shang Tsung, but his ground freeze is fun to do. He really didn't change much.
Now, I had the most fun playing Shang Tsung and morphing into the different characters. Tsung's single, double, and triple fireballs do much damage. I have a question here... My friend and I were both experimenting with Shang Tsung
and it seems that forward - down - forward - HIGH KICK morphs into different characters at different times. I did the move and morphed into Jax. My friend and I both had a laugh, when he did the same move and morphed into Raiden. Sometimes, the move doesn't work at all. Also, my friend swore that he could sometimes morph into Sub-Zero with forward - forward HIGH PUNCH although forward - down - forward HIGH PUNCH works most of the time. I still have not figured out all
of Shang Tsung's morphs, but will keep trying as soon as I get an opportunity.
Kitana is also a fun character. I never picked her, but morphed to her quite a lot using Shang Tsung. The fan throw hurts the opponent quite a lot, and also generates a neat sound and some blood. I couldn't get the fan spin to work
though.
I really wasn't too impressed with Jax. His hits do an awful amount of a
damage, but he doesn't have a "great" move, in my opinion.
I was really impressed with Maleena. Her teleport is quite useful - it reminds me of Scorpion's teleport from the original MK. Both female ninjas are quite fast.
Baraka is a really nasty looking character. His face is just hideous. The blade fury creates an enormous amount of blood, but leaves you extremely
vulnerable if you do it at the wrong time. His knife throw is not as powerful as the other projectiles. It's fun to play Baraka just to see him slice someone
up using his killer blade move.
Scorpion is almost the same as in the original MK, easy to morph to using Shang Tsung, though...
What have they done to RAIDEN!?@!! Raiden was my favorite and best
character in the original MK. In MKII, he wears this goofy red "apron" and in my opinion, looks the worst of all the characters. His moves are all the same -
I'm not sure if there's a new move, but I think Raiden really sucks in MKII. He has lost the speed that he had in MK. Sigh.
Well, here's hoping you all get MKII soon.
Richard
