Need suggestions for rail to maglev upgrade

When I've played a good game, I find myself with a thorough and
elaborate rail network that begins to fail when the trains are no longer
upgradeable. That, of course, means it's time to upgrade to maglev, but
I haven't found a good way to do it. My current method: write down all
the train routes, sell all the trains, demolish and replace everything,
replace the trains. Meanwhile, my entire network is down for long time.

Replacing only small pieces at a time is a limited solution, since so
many trains navigate through the grid.

Any suggestions?

Get Josef Drexler's patch, it makes this tedious job way way way too

Yeah, but doesn't that just take the *fun* out of it?
By the time MagLevs come in, its handy to scrap everything and start again
as the map is awash with unused track, pieced-together runs and other
odds-n-ends thats its worthwhile having a redesign.

Or is my track designing so poor its only me that has to do this?!

Hey,

I agree that it does take the "fun" out of it. I don't tend to start all
over. I do the entire thing in bits, but ensure that there is rail next to
the maglev so that old trains can still get through. This is expensive, but
tends to piss off the towns a bit less. There is a problem with runs like
ore -> steel mill -> factory -> goods though, and I tend to fix these all at
once...

Just a few thoughts...

What really annoys me is that rail, monorail and maglev are all classed
as rail, so you can't join them up to the same station. This doesn't
really matter if you just have lots of end-to-end services which can be
easily converted but if like me you like to have mini networks, or a few
lines serving one central station in a town, it can be a pest having to
either stick to one system or convert the whole load.

Anyway, just my 2ps worth :)

You can mix rail types in one station using the patch.

I wonder if anyone has noticed this but when I first got monorail, I thought
I'd upgrade the important parts of my rail network, and after I'd done it I
checked my performance points and it had went up my around 80 points!
This didn't continue when I got MagLev. I'm not sure why.
The way I replace my trains is by doing them one by one. This way, you get
the maximum benefits of the perfomance points increase. I would say doing
them all at once with the patch, which I downloaded and after seeing some of
the trains I vowed I would never use it, wouldn't get you the maximum
benefits.

Where is the scenario? Chris said Monday, and it's not there!

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with Chris that the patch would make it
too easy. I'm also wary about running software hacked and posted by someone
I don't know - even though Josh Drexeler's hack gets enthusiastic reviews on
many web sites.

One rail-to-maglev upgrade idea I had was to build the connecting maglev
tracks on alternate routes, then demolish the rail stations, replace them
with maglev stations and connect them to the maglev grid - that reduces
downtime. When I tried to do it, I realized that my current rail occupies
the most efficient routes. My next experiment - I'll build duplicate rail
routes to keep the trains running while I replace the old routes with maglev
track, cleaning up the system as I go. Then I'll demolish and replace the
stations and trains.

One idea for future releases, if any, of this game: hybrid locomotives.
These would be unimpressive trains, high price, high annual cost, low speed,
low horsepower, with the ability to run on more than one type of rail.

Another: It should be possible to change the size of a rail station without
demolishing and replacing it - simply add or remove a platform or lengthen
or shorten a platform. It would therefore be possible to add a monorail
platform to rail station, thus allowing a laborious but smooth upgrade.

Understandable, but if it did do something nasty, it would have been posted
by someone calling themselves "tHe HaKeRkInG" or some-such, with a crappy
website that doesn't exist. It would also be v1.0
I've found most patches don't work and any support is non-existent, but all
praise has to be given to Josef for the work he's done, and the support he
gives.

>I agree with Chris that the patch would make it too easy
I get worried when someone agrees with me - its not usual I make sense.....
peanut cat bicycle. Cactus.

>hybrid locomotives
But wouldn't you still have to change the train to a hybrid (if its slower,
you wouldn't want it in normal circulation) change the tracks while the
train is whizzing around, then demolish the station, etc, upgrade the train
.... by the time MagLevs come in, the bank balance is enough to sustain
routes disappearing.

>It should be possible to change the size of a rail station without
>demolishing and replacing it -
Thats one fantastic thing about Josefs patch - this is possible. And very
handy!!
I see your point about adding a monorail to a normal station - not possible
with the patch, but could be handy!!

The No.1 arse-ache has to be selling every individual carriage on a train
though - dragging the pesky things into a bin. Why not just press Delete??
Saves oodles of coding!!

It is so! Or, at least on the version that I have (1.4.2).

These would be based on real life, would they?

I have no idea if such a thing exists in real life. I'm not sure there's a
demand for it.

The only hybrids on railways I know are:
- Diesel-electric engines, which use diesel engines to run generators which
run electric engines (I think all the modern diesel locos are of this type)
- Electric engines which use different current, like here in Finland
Russia-bounding trains get on the border, they get pulled by a russian
engine which can use 25kV alt. current (used in Finland) and 4kV (I'm not
sure about the voltage) direct current (used in Russia).
Where should anybody need an engine which can run on monorail and normal
rail, if that is even possible to build? So I agree with David.

Maglevs do exist. Just not in a common practical existence, as the
technology level increases and the prices decrease, the maglev will become
common-place.

Yes, I know maglevs, monorails and normal-type choo choos exist, but the
original post posited a hybrid locomotive, that could run on
rails/monorail/maglev track (2 or all 3 of them). This would be, AIUI,
physically impossible, because the running gear for each track type would get
in the way of the equipment necessary for the other.

I thought I read somewhere that hybrid track that could be used by both
conventional and maglev trains was a possibility, but certainly monorails
are a beast apart.

BTW am I the only one who prefers the graphics of the monorail track in the
original version of TT over the TTDLX graphics? I used to love building
those long narrow bridges.

Of course they DO exist. I know that. But it was about hybrid locomotives
that could use, for example, both normal and monorail track or normal and
maglev or something like that.

Hmm, I can see where rail and monorail would be incompatible, but maglev could be
combined with either. I picture a locomotive with wheels and with a magnet
sufficiently powerful to keep the wheels above the maglev track. The trickiest
part would be including both propulsion methods in the same vehicle, it would
have to be huge.

The magnet doesnt have to be especially powerful, just leave a couple of
grooves in the maglev track for the wheels.

I dont think it would nessesarily have to be huge, the vehicle-side part
of a maglev system is essentially fixed magnets along the length of
it... the movement is controlled by the track circuitry.
