Has anyone had a play with open TTD? I must say, it does not seem to have
as much going for it as the patched Transport Tycoon. Thank you to all the
folk doing work on the patches etc., it really has given the game a new
lease of life. Shame about Locomotion.

Seconded!

Agree 100%. The biggest possible disappointment from the otherwise
outstanding Mr Chris Sawyer.

Really the patch is just incredible. Its more than just given it a new
lease on life, its now more enjoyable than when it was new, IMHO. And
thats saying a lot about a game that is over 10 years old! That said one
day OTTD will surpass it as it becomes more feature rich than the patch
and the new graphics engine is introduced. However I expect I'll always
play the odd game of ttd patch, it will always have the charm that a
well developed ottd will loose.

It hasn't really shown all that much progress of catching up... there's
progress, but it's not getting any closer. How many years did it take for
elrails to be implemented? And PBS, that was two or three months in the
patch and another two or three to get most of the bugs ironed out, and
after over a year OTTD still doesn't have it in a usable state? And all
the missing newgrf features, and trams, and one-way roads, and soon
articulated road vehicles...

Also, the OTTD developers place more emphasis on them making what they
consider to be the right choices and leaving fewer options for the player.
So elrails can't be turned off if you don't like it, for example.

I'm not saying OTTD is bad or that its coders are bad. OTTD is definitely
nice for platforms that TTD doesn't run on (although I'm happy with TTD
running under Wine on Linux) and for multiplayer games, but it also shows
that "we have the C source code so it'll be easier and faster to write new
features" is nothing but a myth. You do potentially draw from a larger
pool of possible coders, maybe.

Besides, TTDPatch features can be written in C too (with some assembly
wrappers, though).

You completely forgot the absolute FANTASTIC multiplayer mode of
OpenTTD. Multiplayer with TTDPatch just sucks.

Today, Internet has become extremely cheap and so I want to play with
other people instead of with that still stupid AI. And yes, the AI is
VERY stupid, even in TTDPatch.

I know you are developer of TTDPatch and you have a relationship to your
project. But still, OpenTTD has a alot of great features TTDPatch will
never have. The screen resolution for example. TTDPatch doesn' t do that
right at all.

And, sorry, GRFsets nice and shiny, but these are not that very
important IMHO. The really important parts of them (showing the
graphics) already works fine in OpenTTD so who wants more?

Another nice option for OpenTTD: The posibility to easily write your own
patches. Not possible with OpenTTD. ASM is something for real cracks
like you ;-).

Well it doesn't 'suck' as long as you play on LAN and not via the WWW

Excuse me? you can have any resolution you want in TTDPatch what isn't
right about that? (and please try the patch before you shout...)

Is that the important part? I'd guess that is the least important thing?
Gameplay wise everything but the graphics is important..

Anyway I don't like this attitude, I haven't read in the past messages
anything bad about OTTD, except that the development is slow. So why
this tone?

To be fair though, newgrf features ARE being implemented, and OpenTTD now
compared with a couple of versions ago features a whole load more newgrf
than it once did. All in good time... ;-)

Anyway, we've had too many of these topics on the forums, as most people
know, I like both TTDPatch and OpenTTD. :-)

I've yet to have a stable game even on a LAN that lasts for more than
a few years. Although I've not tried it since about 2.0b40, so it
might have improved in the latest releases.

Huh? I thought TTD was limited to running 640x480 - are you saying
that newer versions of the Patch allow you to run it larger than that?
If so - how have I missed that?!

It has, it now supports up to 8 players even.

http://wiki.ttdpatch.net/tiki-index.php?page=Resolution
(to simply zoom the window, there's the StretchWindow switch too)

Great - I'll have to give that a try.

Ah - I generally use the DOS version rather than the Windows one.

Actually, enhanced multiplayer requires the Windows version as well.
That would explain how you've missed it...

Still, ingame chatting, RCON etc. are _a lot_ more comfortable.

No. TTDPatch does not do this right. Things are not correctly centered
etc. It just looks like a hack.

Yes. Graphics are not _the_ important part. But gameplay wise, OTTD
still has more features (sorting in list windows, ingame-patch-window,
great internet play mode etc.).

You got me wrong. I like Josef' s work etc. But I still prefer OTTD and
I just wanted to state why.

Which is OK. But Josef pulled OTTD into the dust compared to his
TTDPatch which was not very nice (And reasonless).

I know that OTTD looks very promising, but TTDPatch is getting features
in much more quickly, like Josef said, and that's why, at least for the
forseeable future, I will still be using TTDPatch. :D
The shots of the new OTTD graphics engine looks good, but I've been
seeing shots since the beginning of last year, and it gets boring
eventually... ;)

this might end up in lots and lots and lots and even more crappy "patches",
ie. graphics that don't fit correctly etc. in TTDP that is.

I must say that I disagree - yes, things aren't properly centred, but
I can't say that it looks bad as a result - I run the windows version
at 1024x768 on an 1152 desktop, and it looks exellent as far as I'm
concerned....
