I have the shareware version of Duke 3D on a computer runnig Windows 95. When
I tried to install it on another computer running Windows XP it installed okay
but when I try to play the game the action is so choppy that it's unplayable.
If I type in DNRATE it shows the framerate to be anywhere from 800 to 1000 fps
(no, that's not a typo) but it's acting more like it's running at 10 fps.

This is my current cut-n-paste file for Duke3d... try in the order
presented.

VDMSound allows the usage of sound cards for Dos games running under
Windows NT, 2000, or XP. It can be downloaded at:
http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/

Duke3D poses an addition problem, since you cannot test for sound within
the setup program. However, if you use the following sound card settings,
the sound will work in game without visible problem:

Sound FX Card: Sound Blaster
Address: 0x220
Sound Card Type: Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32
Interrupt: IRQ 7
8-Bit DMA Channel: 1
16-Bit DMA Channel: 5
Voices: 8
Mixing: 16-bit
Stereo Sound
Mixing rate: 22Khz

Windows XP and DOS programs don't get along. If you download the Windows
port of Duke 3D, you can use it to play the shareware version.
You can get it here: http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/index.php?p=jfduke3d

Just copy the windows version of Duke3D over the DOS version. Then, run the
Setup program, choose your options, save and run. :)
The windows version uses DirectX and DirectSound, so you don't have to
fiddle with emulators or special driver programs.
