And did anything new come out after manhattan project??
Thanks in advance.

Hi Elly,

You can still download the shareware versions of Duke 1,2 & 3 at the 3D
Realms website: http://www.3drealms.com
And you can still order the full version of Duke 3D at
http://www.3drealms.com/games.html

The Duke 3D sourcecode was released a while ago, and a very nice Windows
version of Duke3D and Build can be downloaded for free from JonoF's website.
(The original DOS version of Duke 3D won't run under Windows XP)

Ok... maybe I'm being stupid, or missing something obvious, but:
I downloaded this, and can't quite figure out how to get it to work.
Clicking on "setup" OR "Duke.exe" does nothing but give a message that
game.con is missing.
I'm guessing that what I actually need is to have the original game
loaded, and then the port gets it to run in XP; but how do I manage that if
I haven't got the game already installed?
I seem to recall that I wasn't able to get Duke to *install* after
upgrading to XP.

All you need is a duke3d.grp. The port automatically detects which version
of the game you have. All the required CON files are inside this group file,
so there's no fiddly bits to mess around with.

Yes, but again- for the port to detect a version of the game, doesn't the
game have to be INSTALLED?

The port reads the GRP file and determines the version from that. When you
do a full installation of the game, several other files are copied from the
CD (dmo files for example) to your hard drive. However, the port requires
*only* the group file - so that is all you need to copy over.

There should be some readme or file instructions that come with the 3D port
downloads.

One of the MAIN things they will tell you is that you need the .GRP file
from the original game. THEN run the exe file and the con files will be
extracted!!

Works great on my XP machine.

There was a readme text file, and an HTML file of notes about changes to
the release; neither gave any instructions for actually running the
program. All the readme says (in regards to what you need to have on your HD
already) is " Game detects Shareware, Full v1.3d, and Atomic game data and
behaves in the manner appropriate for the data set."

As I said... nothing like that at all in the files that came with what I
just downloaded.

Bloody hell.
Then just take it from people who *know* what they're talking about. All you
need is the GRP file. Nothing more. If you're trying to get Duke Nukem for
nothing then obviously you don't have a GRP file, in which case you're not
welcome here. If you have the CD and a duke3d.grp is on the CD, then copy it
to your HD, run it thru JonoF's port, and stop your whinging. It's not
rocket science.

Why the sudden attitude? I never said nor implied that you don't know what
you're talking about, I merely commented - in response to what Richard
posted about the readme- on the fact that the documentation that came with
the download wasn't particularly comprehensive.

If you're trying to get Duke Nukem for
> nothing then obviously you don't have a GRP file, in which case you're not
> welcome here.

I never stated, hinted, nor implied that I was trying to get somebody to
give me the games, and I find your leap of illogic both ludicrous and
obnoxious.
In point of fact, I own all the CDs (original Duke, PPak, a couple of
DukeZone CDs, and 2-3 add-on packs) - bought them years ago- and although I
didn't spell it out in so many words, you could have figured that out from
the fact that I said I'd had trouble getting them to install/run on XP.
I lost the original installation a couple of years ago when I needed to
wipe my HD; hadn't re-installed yet when I upgraded to XP. It's been awhile
(over a year) since I tried to reload my Duke3D stuff, so I don't remember
exact details, but my recollection is that something wouldn't install under
XP - either the PPack, or the patch that fixes the memory bug.

If you have the CD and a duke3d.grp is on the CD, then copy it
> to your HD, run it thru JonoF's port

That was already explained, and you're right, it's not rocket science.
Neither is the concept of common courtesy, which is a subject you seem to be
rather uneducated in.

, and stop your whinging.

It's hardly "whinging" to ask "do I need to install the original CDs?"-
which question has already been answered. My comment about the lack of
documentation with the current download was merely to explain to Richard
that I HAD, in fact, read the files that came with it BEFORE asking in here.

I must say, I hope you don't work in any profession where you have to deal
with people; and I certainly hope you never need a bit of help or advice,
and run into somebody with your sort of attitude.

I sincerely apologise for the attitude. But you harping on about 'it not
being in the documentation' when it was clear to me you hadn't so much as
attempted to do what I and others suggested - that is what ticked me off. I
have no quarrel with you.

Common courtesy! Not a single 'thankyou' for the advice I offered - even if
it didn't help you. I'm not expecting gratitude (far from it), but so long
as you're on the topic.

I wish to let the matter rest.
Good luck with getting the game running.

Again, I wasn't "harping on" (and again, you're projecting attitude into
what I wrote that simply WAS NOT THERE); merely responding to someone's
suggestion that I look at the documention by explaining that I'd done so.
And I still don't understand why that caused you to jump to the
unsupported conclusion that I was asking for a pirated copy. Not really
relevant at this point, though, and I don't think we need to rehash it any
further.

>when it was clear to me you hadn't so much as

<shrug> I hadn't had time yet. Still haven't, as a matter of fact, but I
might get to it sometime this weekend.

> Common courtesy! Not a single 'thankyou' for the advice I offered - even
if
> it didn't help you.

You didn't give me the CHANCE to say thank you.

 FYI, here's the sequence:
I asked a quick question about whether or not I needed to install the
games to get the port to run. I came back in, read the 2 new messages, and
found that you had answered the question, and that someone else had also
done so and suggested that I should have checked the read-mes. I quickly
replied that I had, in fact, read them, and was going back up-thread to post
"thanks, I'll try that" to you when I got interrupted (I was on a break at
work, and a customer needed immediate help) and had to log off.
I logged back on the group later to make the post, and found your
nasty-gram.
Perhaps you've simply spent too much time fielding posts from immature
eejits, but having someone jump to an unsupported (and insulting)
conclusion - and continue the leap to land on me with both feet - really
bothered me; ESPECIALLY since I had specifically logged on to say "thanks"
for the information.

As noted above, I haven't yet had time to try it, but will give it a shot
sometime in the next few days; hopefully it will work, although at this
point I'm leery of asking for any more help from this group if it doesn't.

BTW- I do have it up and running.
However, I was correct in thinking that in order to have the PPak work
with the port, it has to be *installed*- there's no GRP file, rather, in
installation it patches the original version of Duke.
I was also remembering correctly that the PPak won't install under
Windows XP on my machine- not from the CD, not even with the patch from 3DR
that's supposed to correct the memory issue.

The workaround was to run the original PPak CD's install program with
VDMSound.

Just goes to show really that usenet can be a harsh place when others are
not aware of your intentions. I've already apologised for my outburst, I
accept it was unwarranted. Yes I jumped to what may seem to you to be an
illogical conclusion, but when you've been around and dealt with a good deal
of people as I have you'd be surprised at exactly how many of them are
trying to get the game (or any any game, for that matter) for nothing.
Insulting you was never the intention - letting you know that, if you had
not actually got the game, that you weren't welcome here - was.

> at this point I'm leery of asking for any more help from this group

By all means ask. The attitude of one doesn't necessarily represent those of
others. I flew off the handle - it happens.

> BTW- I do have it up and running.

Good!

Ah well, that actually makes more sense. I didn't realise (you never
actually said?) you were trying to patch the game with the PPak. In which
case the original game would *have* to be already installed for the patch to
do its work. I concede that you are correct... *grin*

I've only ever bought v1.3d and the Atomic Edition, hence my natural
assumption. JonoF's port works with just the GRP file from both of them -
which is why I couldn't understand your difficulty.

Not surprising at all- I don't post much, but have been popping on and off
various game groups since, oh, 1995 or so, and I've seen plenty of "anybody
got a code?" or "where can I download?" posts.
That's what I meant when I said "maybe you've just dealt with too many
immature eejits". <G>
OTOH, I still find it rather baffling that you read that into what I
posted....

> Ah well, that actually makes more sense. I didn't realise (you never
> actually said?) you were trying to patch the game with the PPak.

I referred to it a bit obliquely - I did say that my recollection was that
last time I'd tried to install Duke, something wouldn't, and I thought it
was the PPak. As previously mentioned, I was posting from work, and in a
hurry, so I wasn't as clear as I should have been.

>In which
> case the original game would *have* to be already installed for the patch
to
> do its work.

Yep, and in order for the port to give me the Atomic version, I had to be
able to get the PATCH installed.... which is where I'd run into problems
last time I tried to install Duke.
The other issue I had in the past was that my current computer setup
doesn't support DOS sound - which is why I was happy to hear about the port,
and of course also why I've subsequently gotten VDMSound.

  Gotcha.

And while we're on the subject- I could figure this out for myself if need
be, but have you tried running any of the add-ons with the port?
I've got Duke in DC, Duke Carribean, the silly Christmas one, and a
DukeZone addon... I think I also have Zero Hour somewhere.
Will it work if I activate an addon, then exit and run the port?

Thanks. I haven't had time to fool around with the add-ons yet, & that'll
head me in the right direction.
