You start at the start of the year 2000 and count > all the years until you reach 1000 and there you have it 3000ad. If your first year is 2000, then 2001 is your second year, and so on. Your thousandth year will be 2999. However, that year 2999 will not be the end of an enumerated millennium, because there never was a year 0. The year before A.D. 1 was 1 B.C. The zero didn't even come into use in the western world until centuries later. > > bill newton wrote--- > > By George, you've almost got it! > > > > Just try to remember that when a Millenium is 'born' it HAS, by > > definition,to be in the past! > > > > If the word born was exclusively past tense then you would have had to > swap your "is `born`" for "was `born`" .The word born is what is known > as a past particle and in no way exclusively implies past tense. A millenium is a unit of time the same as a second ,a > year or a week . Correct. > And what the hell is it with the capital M for millenium. Where > not talking about the T.V. show here . Correct. Also, there are two n's in millennium. Almost everyone in this thread has been misspelling it. > I don`t know about you but i can enter a new 1000 year period whenever i > feel like it. All i have to > do is wait for my watch to start clocking the minute starting at 11:58 > and there you go. I will have just entered a new millenium. Well, no. "New millennium" implies a specific thousand-year period, not just any thousand-year period. Same as "new century." If something happened on June 17, 1897, you could say it happened exactly a century ago, but that did not make June 17, 1897 the beginning of a new century. "New century" is always taken to mean the next enumerated century. We are now in the twentieth century; the new century will be the twenty-first and it will begin on Jan. 1, 2001. No earlier and no later. Neil
