I'll bet you're running Duke3D under Windoze. ;) The crashes occur in map sectors where the Reverb (echo) settings are switched on (like the sewer in E1L2 and in several other places). The real blame goes to Windows and the way it handles hardware requests by programs running under DOS shells. (I never had this problem with my older ISA card.) Try downloading the latest drivers for your soundcard and see if that helps. If it doesn't, the only sure way to avoid the crashes is to run Duke under DOS-only. (I have a Soundblaster Live card and it crashed all the time in those areas. Soundblaster recently released a humongous patch called LiveWare 2.1 which fixes most, but not all of the crashes under Windows. Apparently the new drivers emulate reverb in software. On lower end machines, this will cause a noticable performance hit. If you have a SBLive and a fast machine, go for it. ) --Nut
