3D accelerators are designed primarily with the idea of working with
triangles (polygons) and possibly quads but that's in the future. However,
3D functions can still be applied to a game like Duke Nukem 3D. The 3dfx
patches for Blood and Shadow Warrior are not truly adding much. If you read
the file for Shadow Warrior, it is more of a hack and an addition to the
speed of rendering the screen than anything. Now, with glDoom, GLDoom
Legacy, 3dfx Doom Legacy, ZDoomGL, and DoomGL, the OpenGL/3dfx hardware is
used in rendering the scene and not just applying a filter at the end like
with Shadow Warrior. So a sprite based game could take advantage of 3D
accelerators if it was programmed to do so.

A 3dfx patch will not happen until the source code for BUILD and each
specific game is released. Go to The Blood Source to see what is being done
about this: http://www.planetblood.com/bloodsource/
