Doom 3 Benchmark under +4200 AMD 64 X2 - slower than 3000+

Just wondering what your experience is. I was getting 46 under an AMD Athlon 3000+ and just after installing an 4200+ X2 I was getting 40. I had read that my processor was roughly equal to a 3500+ single core so I was expecting a slightly higher frame rate. Good news is it shines in multi-tasking, something I do alot when not gaming. Expecially at work.... McGrandpa? You had a previous thread on X2. RT

I might add that the benchmark "timedemo demo1 usecache" seemed smoother even thought the framerate was lower. -- AP "The Primate" <primate@primate.com> wrote in message news:wm6kf.121644$gh1.45352@fe09.news.easynews.com... > Just wondering what your experience is. One thing I think I'm looking at is that both the 64 bit architecture and dual core potential are practically wasted under XP Pro 32 bit. A number of A64 single core cpu's DO play Doom3 faster than this rig. And Quake4, Far Cry, etc. Where this thing stands up and completely leaves ALL the others behind is under a 64 bit OS. Far Cry 64 is awesome. But it's a damn lonely world right now, the 64 bit OS. A few games, a few apps. Blinding speed, incredibly smooth. But still have a few periph manufacturers that haven't blessed us with 64 bit drivers. Epson HAS, so I can scan. But Wacom hasn't so I can't draw, and HP hasn't for my printer so I can't use even a third of its capabilities. The 4800+ has a core freq of 2.4gHz. FSB is 2000mhz. I think a A64 3800+ will keep up with it just fine in XP 32 bit. X64 does utilize dual cpu more than XP32. Still, though the fr's are only a little bit higher in Doom3 and HL2 they appear to run much smoother even when the fr's drop low. The P4 with the same 6800GT in it, same PC3200 at DDR400 and dual channel does not look as smooth at all. And I enjoyed Doom3, HL2 and Far Cry with the P4 and 6800GT under XP 32bit. I'm still trying things out and experimenting with different things, as time permits. The one thing I'm not doing is overclocking anything at all. What are we using for benchmarking Doom3? Lemme know and I'll bench it for ya. McG.

Got this for the bench, I'll go run that and see what happens. McG. Should I make the old 3 runs and count the third as we used to without 'usecache'? Either way, the X2 just ran a ring around the P4 3.0E Prescott. I'll play with totally maxed out settings and see how it does. McG.

Nvidia WHQL 77.77 driver set, Image quality = High Quality (best), AA and AF set Application Controlled, refresh set 75 hz. Doom3 console: timedemo demo1 usecache (3 runs each, last count given) 1280x1024-ultra quality, 39.0 fps 1024x768-ultra quality, 50.9 fps 1280x1024-high quality, 61.4 fps 1024x768-high quality, 68.7 fps I definitely see difference in texture quality between Ultra Quality and High Quality. In ultra quality 1280x1024 the textures look clearer, sharper with smoother color blending. It's worth the difference in fr's. I'll play it at 39 fps. And I'll make sure prechache is on ingame, much smoother even in lower fps situations. :) Any tips, thoughts, ideas, anybody? Inglo? McG.

I'll head off in that direction then. May take me a *while* to get Q4/Doom3
and a Linux 64 bit distro all together tho :) I definitely will set up a
HD just for Linux and thanks for reminding me of the 64 bit part. I don't
know Linux well at all so this may well be the most masochistic thing I have
chosen to do to myself in a very long time :)
I'm really curious about that stuff too, Steve! I've *got* the rig, the
CPU is deffo a winner. This sytem at the least is *stable* hardware. It's
a good kit, not too complicated and OC'ing isn't what I'm looking for. I'm
looking for optimal performance with all the hardware in a happy cool
running state. I've got the happy cool running state. I clearly don't have
optimal performance from the CPU yet.
I feel like I'm running around here with a nice looking hot rod with a top
of the line engine with two 4 bbl carbs and only one of them is being used
and can't get the tranny out of low into high. EXCEPT on 'special'
occasions. The difference:
normal, right now.... in the quarter at the tree, tires burn a bit, engine
revs ok, I hit 92mph thru the 1320 trap! cool :) (NOT!)
special occasion.... in the quarter at the tree, huge burnout, engine
deafening, I join the 200 mph club!!!! Where's the freakin brakes!!!
The only thing I've done that really DOES show me that stupendous a
difference is to run XP X64 and Far Cry 64 bit, boot back to XP 32 bit and
run Far Cry regular 32 bit.
I got some hardware changes to make here. I now have several decent usable
hd's for this rig. Two 160g WD EIDE drives and a Seagate Barracuda 80g
EIDE, all running at UDMA5 in XP Pro SP2 right now.
Plan: Get XP Pro SP2 (32 bit) installed and all my main working stuff
running on the newest 160g drive. This will be the main system because of
general completeness of having drivers and full functionality of all my
periphs. I can get all the work done I want to do from this boot.
Set up the 80g just for a data drive. These two drives will be single
partition each and the 160 in NTFS and the data drive in FAT32 so all 4
boots can use that data.
Older of the two WD160g drives. Partition for three op systems. A Linux 32
bit distro, a Linux 64 bit distro and XP x64.
So, right now I'm running XP Pro from the 80g, all 'data' is on the two
160's and kinda needing sorting and putting away elsewhere.
This is gonna take a while. I think I'll go to alt.linux and ask advice on
how to set up booting and partitions for what I want to do. Like which do I
install first, where, blah blah.
Hey, how come you don't build you a X2 rig? You like having some old fart
guinea pig for ya ;) {ducks flying books!}

Waiting for Vista, I guess. Don't know how much it will really improve
things. I also want to buy an XBox360 whenever I can get one. That's
my next main gaming purchase.

Yeah I saw that... some people... I don't think ebay should let that
kind of crap happen.
I'm not going to go looking for an XBox360 anywhere but normal retail
and I'll wait until February if necessary. So if I'm going to be
dropping $400 on one of those soon (plus a couple extra hundred on
games), it's going to be hard to justify upgrading my PC which runs
Quake 4 at 1280x1024 at ~50 fps. FEAR runs a bit sluggish, but I've
played through it three times without much complaint.
I fired up my original XBox yesterday and was playing Riddick, when I
think how awesome that game looks on that 5 year old console, it makes
the decision to buy a new XBox easy.

I can see your angle on this. Nobody has to justify what they buy to me or
anyone as far as I'm concerned. It is good enough you like it like that :)
Myself, I don't really want a console. Got too much pc stuff to play with
already. I do like watching my movies though. I recall your saying you
have a decent TV/monitor to use with your XBox.
That'd be one thing I need to get. A decent TV.

I don't know if it will be. Microsoft should have had the chance to do
a lot of 64 bit design work on it though.

I dunno either. X64 was a double surprise. Half good half bad.
Outstanding speed, but not much in the way of peripheral driver support yet.
