I'll head off in that direction then. May take me a *while* to get Q4/Doom3
and a Linux 64 bit distro all together tho :) I definitely will set up a
HD just for Linux and thanks for reminding me of the 64 bit part. I don't
know Linux well at all so this may well be the most masochistic thing I have
chosen to do to myself in a very long time :)
I'm really curious about that stuff too, Steve! I've *got* the rig, the
CPU is deffo a winner. This sytem at the least is *stable* hardware. It's
a good kit, not too complicated and OC'ing isn't what I'm looking for. I'm
looking for optimal performance with all the hardware in a happy cool
running state. I've got the happy cool running state. I clearly don't have
optimal performance from the CPU yet.
I feel like I'm running around here with a nice looking hot rod with a top
of the line engine with two 4 bbl carbs and only one of them is being used
and can't get the tranny out of low into high. EXCEPT on 'special'
occasions. The difference:
normal, right now.... in the quarter at the tree, tires burn a bit, engine
revs ok, I hit 92mph thru the 1320 trap! cool :) (NOT!)
special occasion.... in the quarter at the tree, huge burnout, engine
deafening, I join the 200 mph club!!!! Where's the freakin brakes!!!
The only thing I've done that really DOES show me that stupendous a
difference is to run XP X64 and Far Cry 64 bit, boot back to XP 32 bit and
run Far Cry regular 32 bit.
I got some hardware changes to make here. I now have several decent usable
hd's for this rig. Two 160g WD EIDE drives and a Seagate Barracuda 80g
EIDE, all running at UDMA5 in XP Pro SP2 right now.
Plan: Get XP Pro SP2 (32 bit) installed and all my main working stuff
running on the newest 160g drive. This will be the main system because of
general completeness of having drivers and full functionality of all my
periphs. I can get all the work done I want to do from this boot.
Set up the 80g just for a data drive. These two drives will be single
partition each and the 160 in NTFS and the data drive in FAT32 so all 4
boots can use that data.
Older of the two WD160g drives. Partition for three op systems. A Linux 32
bit distro, a Linux 64 bit distro and XP x64.
So, right now I'm running XP Pro from the 80g, all 'data' is on the two
160's and kinda needing sorting and putting away elsewhere.
This is gonna take a while. I think I'll go to alt.linux and ask advice on
how to set up booting and partitions for what I want to do. Like which do I
install first, where, blah blah.
Hey, how come you don't build you a X2 rig? You like having some old fart
guinea pig for ya ;) {ducks flying books!}
