Has anyone on this newsgroup heard of DoomRL?

It's basically a port of Doom over to an AscII graphics system and changed
the ruleset to something compatable with similar games in the genre (e.g.
Nethack).

The webpage is here:

Another player told me that it's probaby some joke, but he finds it quite
enjoyable - however, he doesn't play the original Doom.

It basically includes all the weapons from the original game, and adds a
few new ones (combat knife and combat shotgun.) Other than that, it's
basically a spin-off.

It may be a joke, but what are the odds there's some malware involved?

If there was, it would have been detected by the posters in
rec.games.roguelike.development or rec.games.roguelike.misc. Most of the
posters there are experiened programmers and know enough to be able to
detect anything remotly suspicious.

If you don't trust some applications, you can right-click on the executable
file and select "Run As..." Windows will reduce the privilages of the
application and will protect your system files. (Although I haven't seen
any normal application capable of running under this mode.)

As always, check for viruses using AVG or some other virus scanner - which
should prevent viruses from slipping through.
