Most of the posters there are experiened programmers and know enough to be able to detect anything remotly suspicious. If you don't trust some applications, you can right-click on the executable file and select "Run As..." Windows will reduce the privilages of the application and will protect your system files. (Although I haven't seen any normal application capable of running under this mode.) As always, check for viruses using AVG or some other virus scanner - which should prevent viruses from slipping through.
