No CD Required in D3 or RE

When Doom 3 was installed originally last year, I believe the CD was always
required to be in to run the game.

Since installing RE, it appears the the CD is no longer required in either
Doom or RE? Has anyone else noticed this?

I can't remember if it required the CD present after the 1.1 patch or if
I was using a crack. Must have been using a cracked exe.
You should know that Doom 3 verifies your CD Key for both products every
time you start it up now. Though it won't prevent you from playing
single player if there isn't a connection present.

I'm all for more games with online authorization, or stuff like Steam,
rather than getting securom, safedisc and starforce services and drivers
installed on my computer just so a game can check if I have the CD in
the drive or not. I frickin' hate those, I think it was the latest
SWKoTorII patch that just installed a securom thing called
uaService7.exe running as a background service. When I saw that I
freaked out, running virus checks, searching google for info etc...
thinking my system had been compromised.
I played the Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Demo and liked it very much, but
I won't be buying the PC version of the game because it includes
Starforce protection, which installs an actual .sys driver to check if
your CD is there.

Hmmm...so it appears. I've been dutifully putting the CD in, unaware it
wasn't necessary anymore.

Well, that's just one more reason to like Steam a bit more. A .sys
driver for a CD check. That is just too much. Is there even anything
in the EULA about that crap? The idiots just make it harder on the
paying people.

There's a lot of stuff that appears in EULAs that most people can't find
out. If you pick a random EULA and calculate it's readability statistics,
you'll find they generally require a grade 12 reading level as well as
being difficult to read. These statistics don't mean a thing, but they do
help demonstrate what is already known.

Honestly, I don't believe that they even read their own licenses. Some
recent batch of demos from the Maximum PC cover disk where their EULAs
allow you to play two hours - yet the timer only allows one hour of play.

Aside from the EULA part, read what it was Inglo said that one anti
piracy scheme did:

It installed a Windows SYSTEM DRIVER that is going to be there even if
the disk is not. Businesses evidently are allowed to be as invasive as
they want, do whatever they want, as long as they can get away with it.
I use Steam because (so far) it appears to be clean of malware and it
does offer some benefits. But that system driver installed just to do a
cd check? Nope. Gotta go.

Do a little googling on Starforce, you'll find lots of info
<http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&lr=lang_en&safe=off&q=system+driver+starforce+copy+protection&btnG=Search>

The worst thing about it, it works. Almost all the other copy
protection stuff out there can be got around, Starforce is a hard nut to
crack. So it's liable to become more popular.
I had my first intro to Starforce with a really crappy game called
Breed. Whenever you launched the game it would take a minute or more to
verify that the CD was present, grrr. The game Breed itself sucked, so
I uninstalled it (and left it sitting on a table in the laundry room of
my apartment building), yet the Starforce driver was left behind.

I went APE-FUCKING-SHIT. If I had a few more screws loose I might have
turned into an anti-starforce version of SayNo2Steam. Luckily I know
enough about deleting and uninstalling system drivers that I was able to
purge my system, other people have to rely on downloading dubious
starforce removal programs that I wouldn't touch.

I wonder if I can enter that specifically into Trojan Hunter...hm :)

You can try that to see instantly all running processes and where they
come from and are located. TH is pretty good anti-malware.

1. You really shouldn't snip context and reply to the incorrect posting at
the same time. This confuses other posters into thinking that you are
trying to distribute a pirated version of a game.
2. There are people who are not aware of D2D, and wouldn't hesitate to send
reports of piracy to Google Groups and/or fiberia. As I said above - don't
snip context.

All you had to do was click on the link or google direct2drive you fucknut.
If you or any other netcop wannabe did complain about his post, you would
simply continue to waste your time and inflate your own ego.

Just who the fuck do you think you are?

The same can be said about Outwar links. What's your point?

Oh, I get it - Another AOL-class troll. You really should get out more
since AOL-class trolls are "soooo nineties." Perhaps you might even
learn to troll properly, such as making claims that the Earth is flat.
(Which it is - why else wouldn't games like Doom calculate the curvature of
the Earth or Mars into rendering calculations?)

The same could not said jackass. The poster gave a link to a valid,
commercial website where you could DL the game without starforce and you
chose to play moderator, accuse him of providing a link to pirate software
and threaten to report him to his ISP for doing so! You were compelled to do
so by your own stupidity and/or hubris. You sir, are simply an asswipe.

You don't "get it" now and never will. Pseudo-Usenet Cops like yourself are

Try to stay on topic fucknut.

BTW, the only thing that may be flat around here is the top of your head.
Pity Mommy dropped you that day...

In this paragraph, I said that there are people who aren't aware of D2D and
won't hesitate to send reports of piracy. I've seen it happen before
(because some troll reported an innoceus posting as spam) and it's bound to
happen again.

If you had bothered to read the posting (which you obviously havent), you
would have known this.

By whom? Obviously, you aren't doing a very good job of it.

By the way, you should mind your own business. If there is a complaint
about my post, it's between me and the OP.

>Try to stay on topic

And yet, you remain quiet when someone posts about Spliner Cell. Hypocrasy
doesn't get more blatent than that.

You are also posting on the wrong newsgroup. This "fucking" that you are
talking about is in Duke3D, not Doom 3. Try to stay on topic with your
troll postings, next time.
