My roommate and I are hooked into our university's network via the twisted
pair outlet in our dorm room. Since we only have one outlet they gave us a
passive splitter. When playing Doom we get some periodic (every few minutes)
lockups. The game freezes for a few seconds then continues fine. It's purely
a _minor_ annoyance, no big deal, but I'm curious as to what would be causing
this. Other people on the floor don't experience this...but then we're all
linked with a star LAN active splitter... Are my roommate's and my packets
colliding? And is this due to the broadcasting (i.e. will directed packets
solve the problem)? I don't know a hell of a lot about LANs!

I recently installed DOOM on some PC's using the Western Digital 8003e networking
cards with the drivers originally packaged with DOOMSER.ARJ (the functional but
dog slow networking drivers) and I had no problems getting it to network
whatsoever. Even though I do not load any TCP/IP drivers (though the machines
are still physically networked) the machines will occasionally pause for a second
or two, so don't be surprised!

How about DOOM for the Enhanced Apple //e (DHR - 1Mb of memory - 20mb HD)
