Doom 3 7.1 Surround

I have an Audigy 2 ZS with 7.1 speakers.  With 7.1 set in both the
control panel and the Creative driver, Doom 3 reports that no Surround
sound system was detected.  If I change all the settings to 5.1, then
Doom 3 detects the surrond hardware.  I thought Doom 3 was the first
game to fully support 7.1, so how do I get it to work?
