I used to have this problem on my computer. Everything was too dark and I always had to turn up the brightness and gamma in my video card settings. But this also made the image look washed out, and sometimes just wasn't enough. I bought a new monitor and now everything looks just like the screenshots you see on all the game review sites. btw, it's a ViewSonic G220fb. I highly recommend it.
