I would like very much to see a version of Doom for the Mac - It is simply a matter of personal preference (I won't argue about which is better for Doom, but I know which would be easier for me.) I have played Pathways Into Darkness (the full version, not the shareware) and I suppose it would fit right between Wolf3d and Doom for quality. The graphics are of course of better resolution and having multiple windows open for inventory, status, etc. is kinda handy. However, it doesn't have the incredible action that Doom does (nothing does, for that matter). Pathways actually seems to take the idea of a texture-mapped environment and makes it more of a mystery to solve than a lot of things to kill. It's good, but in a different way. How many people remember the original Castle Wolfenstein? I still have it (along with an Apple ][+ in the closet) and the one thing I kinda miss is grenades. Admittedly, bringing them back would cause problems (secret doors wouldn't be so secret if you can blow through the wall) and some of the weapons in Doom duplicate the effects (BFG 9000 is the last word in damage) but... Maybe being able to toss a grenade over a barrier or to toss it around a corner into another room could be incorporated. Just a little nostalgia.
