Doom is definitely the current state of the art in PC games, IMHO. I was showing it off to some of my co-workers today, and they were very impressed. Anyhow, I remember back when games like "Racing Construction Set" ( I may have munged the title ) were the state of the art. A Doom Construction Set would be really cool. Not something hacked up like what people have for Wolfenstein 3-D, but an actual product that allows you to easily make really cool levels, design your own monsters and weapons, etc. I think sales of DOOM are going to be brisk, but with something like this as an extra product you could buy, would make sales literally explode, I think. People would of course be able to trade their scenarios, etc. Another cool thing would be to write a version of DOOM for UNIX workstations, taking advantage of the cool display hardware many of us have (SGI, Sun, etc.). A properly written networking DOOM on UNIX could give much greater potential performance than it currently has. I've heard many stories about entire PC LANS going down because of people playing DOOM. Does anyone from Id read this newsgroup ? =O) >Oh, speaking on buying DOOM. If you know anyone that's selling the shareware >version (1st episode only) for anything more than a few bucks, call id and >let them know. There are folks that are selling the free shareware DOOM >for $12 plus + and are making a killing without giving anything to id. >Call id up or drop them email so that we can expect more great stuff from >these guys. Erm, you shouldn't BUY shareware, it's FREE. If you buy it, and pay anything but mail cost (like if you can't ftp it), you are being stupid. The point of shareware is to distribute free of charge, and for the consumer to decide to support the authors. >bravo again to id! Yes, they are truly amazing magicians. Today I thought I could make a killing as a 486 upgrade-board salesman by just going door to door and showing the difference between a fast 486 and slow 386 running DOOM. Almost everyone that I know that has seen it on a 486 (and has a slow 386) immediately says, "Okay, time to upgrade! I've got my reason now". Extra points to Id for writing a game that uses all the power of a fast CPU. > >alan -- "I have ... Cary Grant karma, because I always prevail!
