Greetings all! Is anybody else out there playing Diablo with a Ensoniq Soundscape Elite? I seem to have difficulties with it. Every time I play Diablo, some sound effects and MIDI music are come out as a burst of loud static. I say about 50% of all sound effects are come out as static. As you can imagine, this means I have to play with the sound manually turned off (no power to the speakers. Turning sounds down in the game doesn't work... I still get static.) I have the latest build of the drivers from Ensoniq. I also have the latest version of DirectSound installed. Yet, the problem persists. Any help? -------- "Only the crazies hang around nursery."

I'm afraid I really can't offer any advice, but I have an Ensoniq
Soundscape VIVO, and while not all the effects come out as static,
sometimes when I start a level, a whole hell of a lot of static comes
out of my speakers, and it will stay that way until I go to another
level. The Diablo readme said it had something to do with DirectSound,
but like you, I have the latest Ensoniq drivers and the lastest version
of DirectSound.
The only thing that comes to mind might be that DirectSound overwrote
your sound driver with one that isn't quite as good as the one you had
before. Did you install DirectSound before the new Ensoniq drivers?

I seem to have the same problem. In multiplayer games, I usually turn off the music but leave the sound. Like you, the intermittent static or squealing still occurs. It's not as bad as 50% for me, fortunately. On Ensoniq's website, I think they say they do NOT provide separate DirectSound drivers. They state that their current drivers are compatible with the latest version 3 of DirectX since the DirectSound component did not change from 2 to 3.

It is more like 10% of the time for me - which is easy to fix by quickly saving and reloading in the single player game or in either the single player game or multiplayer game by going up/down stairs or using a town portal. Annoying, but workable. Desslock

Annoying, but workable. I don't have an Equinox, but my soundcard goes schitzo occasionally too. I have found out that if you just go into the options, and drop the music volume all the way down and then move it back, it usually fixes the problem. Works for me, but your milage may vary.

Under audio, make sure "Use Prefered Devices only" is checked. (rebooting might be necessary) This alone didn't work for me. After playing around a bit I found that selecting the 'Soundscape Playtback (330)' option under preferred device fixed the problem. Give it a try, and good luck!

Why deal with this problem Skasoup, when you can alleviate it and all
future problems by spending $75 for a Soundblaster 16 card, and not deal
with this obviously annoying problem any more? I'd understand this not
being a viable solution if it were hundreds of dollars, but so many of
my fellow gamers out there would be alleviating a MASSIVE amount of
headaches if they would just install the game develpers base card they
program to, instead of the chump card Gateway or Dell low bucked you
into . . . .

There are still many good games that support MIDI, and the Soundscape Elite has far superior sound to the Soundblaster 32 Awe, let alone a non-midi card like the Sb 16. Virtually no games are released now without a Win95 version, and with Win95 "soundblaster" compatibility is irrelevant. Desslock

Go to the control panel in Win95 (start button - settings - control panel) click on multimedia and make sure that the "use preferred devices only" button is clicked, and that under "playback", preferred device is Soundscape Playback 330. That should do the trick! Desslock

So, do you know why it works? Or if there are any side effects? Since "use preferred devices only" means that software will only be able to access the Soundscape Playback 330 and not the 534, I am wondering if I am limiting myself somehow? Ken

Um yeah, speaking from the point of view of someone who makes Game music, and is trying to make a career out of it. SB's, AWE included (though I havn't heard the "64") sound like crap ""Best Sound Card"?" ? um sure for dos games but not for sound quality or for quality of the Synth sound, right now the best sounding card (if you can find one), would be one of Rolands SCDB's or SCC1. A close runner up (and in some ways better) Card would be Yamaha'a XG's Think of them as the 3dfx (3d card) of sound cards to the SB's Mystique and you wouldn't be far off. CL Labs has a nice (but somewhat crippled) little standard going Win95 games make that standard far less important. some people are willing to give up a little trouble to have better sounding (Midi) music and cleaner Audio. > -- > Saam Tariverdi > sa...@icode.com > http://www.icode.com/shock > (My Unofficial System Shock Page) > > Simon Juncal <s^jun...@erols.com> wrote in article > <33170F...@erols.com>... > > Saam Tariverdi wrote: > > > > > > ESS sucks.
