D I A B L O: Does a specific Level Seed generate the same Quests?

I was wondering just at WHAT point does the game decide to give you a
particular Quest, and how random are each of the various Quests?
(ie. Do some Quests come up more frequently than others). I ask this
because my friend Dave has played most of the game twice now, and has
yet to see those involving Anvil of Fury and Lachdanan.

For example, in order to give you the scenario with The Butcher, the
game must generate Level 2 with the guy's den and the Cleaver AS WELL
AS Level 1 at the same time. Does this mean that all the Quests are
predetermined from the onset -- depending on what Seed your whole
dungeon has -- or is there a different Seed for each grouping of
Church, Catacombs, Hell levels, etc. Is there no way to select a
particular seed for your dungeon?

I think that the quests are in the single player game no matter what dungeon
is generated. You just have to be sure that you talk to all of the towns
people whenver you go to town. You will get the Anvil quest from the
blacksmith. After that quest, I think you will be given a quest from the
witch, and the healer at about the same time. I know that it gets very
repetitive listening to all of their opening remarks over and over again, but,
you will just have to make sure that you talk to the people in town if you do
not want to miss out on all of the quests.

I didn't get the Anvil quest until my third game through. Likewise, in three games,
I only got Lachdanan, Gridbald the Weak (or whatever his name is), and Leoric
once each. So I don't think it's that uncommon. In fact, I think it's a nice feature
to hold some surprises for future games.

Nope, definitely not.

I don't know if talking with everyone helps, because I did do it once every level in
single player.

In playing through several levels of multiplayer (solo), I found that the Butcher, the
Skeleton King, etc., were all in the dungeon, even though I hadn't heard about
them from anyone in advance. (And let me tell you, the King barreling down on
my poor weak character without advanced warning was enough to my heart
skip...)

No sometimes you can go without the anvil of fury. I know cause I have
know beaten with all 3 character classes . And each time I got totally
different level structures , some new subquests and magical weapons with
totally different attributes then before. It is totally random.

Hmmm, well, all I can say is that I played the single player game only once
and have not heard about any other quests than the ones I encountered. In
other words, I don't think that there are any other quests. I found all that
have been mentioned so far, and I was able to complete all of them. Everytime
I came up from the dungeon, I talked to every person in town. Sometimes they
did not tell me anything usefull, sometimes I got a quest. Even though I
played the single player game only once, I did end up starting the game over a
couple of times until I chose a name for my character that I liked. Everytime
I restarted, I got the quest for the Butcher. You get it from the half dead
man in front of the church. Every game that I have been in - in multiplayer -
has always had the dead man in front of the church. The inkeeper always says
the same thing to me in each game. If you did not get the Butcher quest, then
it is because you did not talk to anyone. As you have said yourself, the
Butcher is always there, therefore, the quest is always there. Same with the
Skeleton King. If you don't talk to anyone - like the inkeeper - you will
never know about that quest. However, he will be down there waiting for you.
These two quests are always in the single player game, and always in the
multiplayer game.

There are, however, some quests that are specific to the single player game.
Quests like the Demon brain, and the big Mushroom. I have yet to see those in
the multiplayer game, but, I really don't care if they are there. If I want
to play the single player game, then I want something special in the single
player game.

Anyway, my point in writing all of this is to say that I have been watching
these newsgroups pretty often, and I have not seen anyone write about a quest
that I have not been on myself. If you did not have a particular quest, then
you just did not explore enough, or ask enough questions.

I agree that these two are 'always' in the multiplayer game (I've never
seen one without them), but I have a single-player game with a Rogue in which
I did get the King Leoric quest but not the Butcher.

I started a warrior, and got a lot of quests, then i restarted with a
sorceror, and got the same quests. I restarted with a rogue, and I didn't
get the poisoned water quest...

Bottom Line:

Mutiplayer - only 4 quests: Butcher, Skeleton King, Lazarus, and Diablo
(they are present in EVERY game).

Single Player - completely random quests, except for Lazarus and Diablo,
which are always in the game.

I read in a FAQ somewhere that there are approximately 30 quests to be
encountered and each single player game gets from 5 to 8. No guarentee
that this is correct. This is just something that I heard and seems to
about right. Later.

I do know that not all the quests are in all single player games. In
my first game, I did not receive the quest for the butcher, but I did
in the second one. I seemed to find about one quest per two levels.
Some of the quests are probably in all games (notably the Lazarus
quest).

I was wondering if anyone had gotten a quest from anyone other than
Ogden--innkeeper (the sign), Pepin--Healer (the poisoned water +
others), Griswold--blacksmith (magic rock etc), Cain--indentifier
(Lazarus quest), Adra(sp?)--witch (Demon's brain--but I haven't seen
this one). Is it necessary to visit the barmaid and drunk every time
you are in town? Also, does Wirt give you any quests?

I've had the opposite, but also in a single-person game.

Wierd, in my first pass through the single player game, I talked to
*everyone* before going down to the dungeon for the first time - I never
met the dying soldier, nor did I ever see the butcher on any level. My
first quest was the tainted water supply. After that I had to get the
"magic stone" for griswald to fashion a ring, then the stolen tavern sign.
But my second game with a mage, I did not talk to anyone and headed
towards the church, and there was the dying soldier.

When I first heard about the butcher, I was puzzled since I had never met
him. I first met him in multiplayer.

Ummmm, no. I went through the dungeon 3 times and only got the Skeleton
King quest once. What about the poisoned water supply? I only got that
twice. In fact, the only quests I got all 3 times through the dungeon were
the Butcher (who's always there in multi-player and single) Archbishop
Lazarus (same) and Diablo (same)

I have yet to see any multiplayer quests aside from the Butcher, the
Skeleton King, Archbishop Lazarus, and Diablo. Being almost level 37, I
feel quite safe in saying that those are the only ones, and that they're
always there.

i ever went into the dungeons without the butcher, water poisoning, King
Leoric or missing sign quest.

however, i have not been able to remember a time when i did not meet up

Cool, you just mentioned a couple of quests that I have not heard about. I
did not know that there was a stolen tavern sign quest, hehe.

Anyway, I am pretty bored with the game. I think that I am going back to War2
until Starcraft comes out. I like the "competition factor" in War2. Even
though the game gets redundant (for those of us that are really good, and know
what to do every game) it is still fun because of the "competition factor".
There is nothing like being able to dominate over another player, or even two
other players - whichever. I hope that Starcraft does not disappoint me as
much as Daiblo has. Don't get me wrong, the game looks good, and it is a good
"temporary" game, but there is nothing to keep me playing the game all of the
time such as was the case with War2. What's left after you find the right
weopons for your character? Or, the right armor for your character? Or, the
right amulet and rings? How far can you take trading everthing you find
(especially with thieves abroad)? What is the point in starting another
character when you will end up finding the same items that you found with the
first character? Maybe there are different quests in the single player game
to be found, but is that a strong enough appeal to keep someone playing?
"Ooohhh, another quest! Now I can continue playing Diablo a little longer..."

Then there is the different game settings. Why would I want to fight the same
old creatures over and over again? Sure, there are a few new ones as you set
the setting to Nightmare or Hell, but... so what, they amount to only a few.
Maybe if the game would have been developed to let us fight the brothers of
Diablo (the ones we read about in those books we sometimes find in the
dungeons) as we changed from Normal to Nightmare to Hell, then there would be
a stronger appeal to the game. As it is, you beat Diablo on normal setting
and get an ending animation. On Nightmare, you beat Diablo and get the same
ending. On hell, you beat him and get the same ending. hmmmm, that is
something to really look forward to. And the monsters... well, once you
figure out their weakness, they are too easy to beat. Even if they don't have
much of a weakness, you end up having a strong enough ac that they barely even
hurt you while you stone them and slash them. Or, if you play using a good
attack strategy, you hardly ever have to go to town to get more mana/heal
potions.

All in all, Diablo is here temporarily. This past month has been a good month
for Diablo, and probably the next month - maybe month and a half - will still
prove to be good selling months. But, the game is not going to last even 1/4
as long as War2 did. Oh, well, not a serious loss. Like I mentioned before,
I just hope that Starcraft is not as short lasting like Diablo is.

This is an example of how two people can differ in their opions so much. I
thought War 2 was an enjoyable game for a month or two but that was about
it. Diablo seems to have no end in sight for me yet. I'm still enjoying
playing my first character immensely and look forward to playing the other
two classes and then the single player game just to see the quests. Then
some friends and I are going to start a game with fresh characters and see
if we can go through the dungeon just once and beat Diablo. By the time all
this is through I may be a little tired of it, but I hope an add-on will be
imminient.

100% Agreed. I also thought that War 2 was a quality, very polished game
- even bought the expansion disk - but the single player game was fairly
easy to defeat (same as Diablo, I suppose), and multiplayer was
interesting - but only for a while, for me. I much prefer the
cooperative play, and variety of characters, of Diablo. I found War 2
just "too much of the same" after a while, which is, ironically, one of
the complaints some people have made about Diablo. Different tastes for
everyone, I guess. Both games will be very successful in the long run.

Nope, you don't always get the Butcher either.
Lazarus and Diablo seem to be the only 'required' quests.
Is there a canonical list of quests yet? The only ones I've found so
far are incomplete.

Let's begin:
---------------------------------------------
Level	Name Given By	Enemy Reward
2	Butcher Dying Man	Butcher Cleaver
2	Poisoned Water Healer Goat Men	Ring of Truth
3	King Leoric Ogden King Leoric	Many
4	Ogden's Sign Ogden Many Carvers	Harlequin Helm
5	Arkaines Valor Tome Horned Demons	Valor Armor
8	Halls of the Blind	Tome Illusion Weavers	Optic Amulet
15	ArchB Lazarus Cain Lazarus ?
16	Diablo Cain Diablo Game Over

I've got to run to a meeting... can others fill in?

No, he's not always there in single player games - the only quests which
are always present in a single player game are Lazarus and Diablo.

I'm not sure if I got all of the levels or names right since I'm
writing this from memory. Are there any other quests in the game?

You don't. There are very few quests in the multiplayer game. They
are:

The Butcher
The Skeleton King
Lazarus
Diablo

Of course you have the mini bosses on the various levels but they
aren't considered to be quests. If there were one thing I could change
about Diablo it would be to add more quests in multiplayer contests.
Maybe something that would actually require two people working together
to complete - a quest that could not be accomplished alone. Maybe we'll
see something like this in Diablo II? <g>

Everything about diablo single player quests are entirely random. You
will get different quests from the 30 or so quests in the 'quest pool'
everytime you play. This randomness is generated from your system clock.
On an interesting note, if you set your clock past the year 2000, you
will get the same random 'seed' everytime. And the dungeons and such
will always be the same. Or if your system clock is tweeked i spose youd
see the same quests over and over. No quests in single player are there
'everytime' except diablo and laz.
Multiplayer quests are always the same, kinda disappointing.

Does anyone else find it amazing how many replies have been made concerning
single player quests, and how few people notice that I was talking about
multi player (even though it is rather blatent) :)

I have also seen more quests on the Single Player than on Diablo like
the poisoned water quest etc. etc.

Since we're on the topic of multi-player games, have you seen any
correlation between the level of the game creator (the PC whose name
appears in the upper left when automap is on) and the difficulty of
the levels in the dungeon? Or alternatively, between the cumulative
kill count on the creating machine since the kill count persists
through a New Game even when another PC is chosen?

The reason I am asking is that I had been playing all day, collecting
stats on monsters. When I created the evening's game with my level 23
rogue, the resulting game was so hard that our level 18 characters
died several times on level 6. The next game, created the following
day by one of the level 18 characters, was easy enough to make it
through level 9 in the dungeon with few deaths. I also had not been
studying monsters that day prior to the game creation.

I think Sandra that certain combo's of monsters are more deadly than
others and that the type of monsters created are different per each
game. So unless you want to reroll a game by each of you untill you
get a certain level with a certain set of monsters and then test your
theory I don't know any way to get an answer.

I have a question. Do you get more experience playing say, the caves in
normal mode, or the catacombs in nighmare? Or hell in normal versus the
caves in nightmare. How do you get the most experience?

We got more experience playing levels 1 and 2 in nightmare mode than
from playing levels 7 and 8 in normal mode. But it was a lot more
boring as well. So we just did it until we were good enough to go
back and do levels 9 - 12 in normal. Nightmare is also good for
accumulating wealth if you are running short.

Also, you stop getting exp points in normal mode levels 1-? when you get
in to level 28. And it goes deeper when you hit 30+. I am L32 and still
getting points from normal hell levels, although not much. (Blizzard
just forcing us to go deeper!)

The catacombs in nightmare. At 27th level, which you indicate you are,
you will receive very little experience going through normal - by the
time you gain a couple more levels, you won't get -any-

I was level 30, and gained two easy levels starting from lvl1 down to lvl 9 in
Hell mode.. and I was flying through the levels.. although I almost died on
lvl 9.. :)

Well, at lv27, you probably don't get *any* exp from playing the
caves in normal. :)
But I've been going for the highest skill level I can survive -
the gold's much better. Right now that means Hell in nightmare mode or
caves in hell mode.
To balance the gold, you seem to get better items in lower
dungeon levels...but also at higher skill levels. Er...your mileage may vary.
	Helpful, huh?
I find the stores seem to have better stuff in hell mode, but
that could just be random, too.

You get XP increadibly fast in the dungeon in nightmare mode. And: it is
quite a safe place, I think it´s safer then hell in nightmare or perhaps
even safer than the caves in nightmare, though not quite sure. Anyway:
you surely get more XP and much more money there. After my sorcerer
reached lvl 30, I never had any money problems any longer except for the
one: where to put all that money? :) You get something like 20k for one
lvl in the dungeon (perhaps less in the first, but more in the last
ones). I started with 20k and have as much as 50k now, even after buying
several expensive books (mana shields, teleport, golem, elemental and so
on) and each elixir I could buy.

And as I said before: it is not dangerous. A Golem will kill everything
in lvl 1 and 2 (except perhaps the butcher, not quite sure) and will do
good work even in lvl 3 and 4. (after you killed skeleton king and his
archers of course).

But you also NEED a lot more to advance. I remember when it was a
few thousands. Now its a few million XP :)

So what are a few good ways to keep money? I don't like reserving 20
spaces right now for the stash i'm carrying. I don't trust leaving
stuff in town because it has a tendency to disappear for random
reasons (no, nobody joined my game) and I can't create a dummy char to
keep the cash. Its a shame armor is so expensive.

Golem gets his butt kicked in nightmare against the butcher (golem
level 1, damage 11-17)

A friend has worked his way up to level 41. I think he told me he needs 50
million experience points for level 42.

You can only carry so much, of course, but I do several things. 1) Repair
everything -- no sense leaving 15k on the ground if it can be put to use.
2) Make sure your belt is full. I often buy elixers not to use anymore (I'm
maxed on stats) but merely because I can sell them for $1250. Keep any ring
or amulet that Gris will pay you more then $5000 for -- or any weapon that
is worth more than $5000 per inventory slot. You only have X number if
inventory slots, and if something takes up a single slot and is worth more
than 5K, hold on to it. This becomes handy when you go to Adria and she has
an Angel's Staff of the Apocolaypse for $135,000 and you realize you have
to come up with the cash NOW because she changes her inventory every time
you go into the dungeon.

Never sell anything that would take more spots as cash than as an item.
That's usually amulets and rings, but can even include swords or daggers or
(rarely) armor.

My golem does pretty good usually (level 19) :)

get more experience by playing the highest level you could. :)
Course, you also tend to die a lot more but hey.. it's fun as hell. I
wouldn't recommend a lvl27 rogue in nightmare/hell though.. that's
taking it a bit too far. I guess this depends a lot on your AC. My
characters ( level 29 mage & level 29 rogue ) both have problems in
nightmare/hell with an ac of about 125.

Yeah, sorry, I wanted to say dungeon HELL is safer than hell in
nightmare. I always get confused by all those different terms :)

I drop my money in town. Normally I only play games with people I know
(with password protection), but if someone else would take it: it really
maskes no difference if you can amass so much money in dungeon HELL mode.
Believe me, it´s like robbing fort knox :)

Golem gets his butt kicked against the butcher, that´s right, but against
normal monsters he will rock. He kills them all, except when he is
surrounded by too many or when there are monsters witch ranged attacks.
But he needs only one blow against those skeletons and scavengers and
what else creeps around. This surely is funny, since he only does 11-17
damage (according to the spellbook) and the skeletons have more than 200
in HELL mode, but this is the way it is.

Again: What I wanted to say: dungeon HELL mode is easier than hell
NIGHTMARE mode. Sorry about that mistake. It surely confused the readers.
