Diablo - Phase Spell - It Can Be Very Important

Contrary to some comments about this spell, Phase, I have read
one can use it to randomly teleport their character through a wall
into another independent room that your character _may_ have never
been in before.

Last night I was playing my Singe Player game and was presented a
dungeon L5 with stairs into it but no stairs leading down to L6 or
stairs leading up to the town. However the auto map and two views in
the dungeon clearly showed there was more dungeon I needed to reach
somehow. One location especially had a very thin wall between it and
where my character was. I kept buying Phase scrolls (for lack of
nothing better to try) and the first 3 phased me to a different point
in the same room. The fourth phase moved me through this wall into
the new dungeon region. I was able to complete not only that dungeon
level but also the quest I was on for the Magic Rock that fell from
the heavens for Griswold and, of course, I found the missing stairs
tool.

I am specifically pointing this out because most people I have
read on the subject think the Phase Spell is useless or very limited
in tactical purpose and this is a good example of a critical use.

hmmm, I'm still skeptical that there was no way around to the stairways
without using phasing - but I thought I should point out that there is
an easier way to use "phasing". All you have to do is target the area
you want to move to with the mouse curser and "right-click" - it will
allow you greater control over where you appear.

Desslock.

I still think phasing (and teleport - why are there 2 of these spells?)
are pretty useless.

Are you sure about that with Phasing? I tried clicking where I wanted to
go, and it almost never took me close. It usually took me backwards

You can AIM Teleport..not phasing. Phasing is relatively random,
though it seems to always dump me into a room full of monsters :)

THAT'S why there are 2 different spells. Phasing is cheap and easy to
find. Teleport costs 20K for the book and is pretty rare.

Yes. Yesterday I phased right into the middle of a room with about 55
baddies in it. I was able to kill them, but just barely. Quite a
surprize.

Agreed. Figured out the difference after I posted my original message.
I just coincidently went where I was pointed the first few, and only,
times I used the phasing spell. Still think it's useless for my style
of play, unless you need a quick, random "escapee".

I think Phasing should **NOT*** be next to mana shield in the speedbook.
I'm sitting outside of Nightmare Lazarus's room, thinking I'm about to cast
a mana shield, and next thing I hear is "Abandon all hope...blah blah
blah..." Needless to say I was really confused, thinking "abandon hope? I
just want to cast a mana shield!!!!" and I got butchered. :)

Teleport is great for zipping around the dungeon at high speed; no
more walking all the way down to the other end of the room to go
through a door if you can just teleport through the wall!

Well, read my lips one last time. There was nothing I missed.
The wall I had to pass through was obvious. Adria's phasing scrolls
were plentiful. Phase _is_ random but after enough tries you can go
where you could not go before. :)

>>> I still think phasing (and teleport - why are there 2 of these spells?)

Depending on your game situation you may not need to use Phase
ever. It is a tactical spell that can be used several ways, but
because it is random and cannot be directed it can be risky. Ah the
joys of playing Single Player and having a quick Save Game feature.
(Loading a saved game takes much longer).

>>Are you sure about that with Phasing? I tried clicking where I wanted to
>>go, and it almost never took me close. It usually took me backwards

Phase is random. After 4 or 5 tries you might discover going
where you want to go, but only into an adjacent room at best. It is
not teleport.

>Teleport is great for zipping around the dungeon at high speed; no
>more walking all the way down to the other end of the room to go
>through a door if you can just teleport through the wall!

I have two teleport scrolls I found but cannot use them yet as I
need a lot more magic. I have been building up my character's basic
stats evenly. This presents some disadvantages now but I am guessing
will present advantages later on, though it may not matter then
either. I haven't found a current need for teleport. I am now a L20
Rogue on level 13 (Hell 1) in Single Player mode and I have a mess
dealing with the new badies in Hell. I am assuming at this point
there are some tactics I can discover to get me through this as much
as I discovered to get me through The Caves. But it sure looks bad.
I am hoping I don't have to start a new game yet.

As usual I have not died enough times to get the creatures names
but I suspect if you can help you know what ones I am up against. The
monsters seem to be associated with the different dungeon sections and
L13 of Hell probably says it all. My technique up to this point has
been to draw out each monster one or two at a time if possible and
kill them. Then get noticed again and draw out one or two more. I
save and/or restore depending on making any progress or not like
Carter has little liver pills. The heightened problem with L13 is
that I am taking lots of lightning damage though I have some
resistance from it. I have not made much progress yet as I am right
at the start of L13. I don't seem to have any spell effective against
the winged monsters. My best weapon still remains my Bow of the Bear
which does only 1-3 or 1-6 damage, but knocks the monster back. It is
a painfully slow process.

	Any ideas? Thank you.

While the knockback of the Bow of the Bear is nice in a lot of places,
there are other times you need to get a higher damage weapon. My
first advice would be to try and find a higher damage bow. Most of
the heavy war bows are 1-14 damage and you can often find them with
plusses to damage (massive, brutal bows, or bows with fire or
lightning damage). If you pin a monster down with repeated hits, it
will have nearly the same effect as the knockback (i.e. they won't be
able to do anything until they die). Hope this helps :)

Sorry, still think you missed something :(
There are certain areas which will not "open up" until you complete a
certain action, i.e. pull a lever or read a certain book.

I've put a lot of hours into the game and never encountered that
problem. And no one else on this newsgroup has posted indicating that
they ran into a dead end. Considering the number of times the same
basic questions get asked on this newsgroup - i.e. how do you kill the
Butcher? etc. if there really were areas which you could only reach by
teleporting, this newsgroup would be overflowing with complaints and
questions every time someone got lost. Frankly, it would have been a
poor design decision for Blizzard to have put in dead ends like you
speak of.

I encountered the exact same problem when I was in level 5 of the
dungeons. I was stuck. I searched my entire map for any doors that I
missed. I looked for levers and books. There were none. I didn't even
think about using Phase. I just started over.

I finished the single player game with lvl 26 Rogue. I used Bow of the
Bear too (I bought it when I was about level 3). It's not too hard if
you advance very slowly and use the firewall spell. Steel Lords/Blood
Lords etc. are easy unless they manage to surround you. Just retreat
if they get too close. Easy way to kill those Succubi/Snow Witches
/whatever is to make few fire walls in front of you as soon as you see
them and then retreat a bit to make them follow you into the fire and
finish off any survivors with the bow. Diablo should be easy to kill.

Phasing is a crappy spell. I thought that it would be usefull to use to
get out of a jam quickly. I was in the caves and surrounded by a bunch
of lava guys. I hit the phase spell and BAM... i was transported about
3 squares away. I died shortly after. There is no controlling phasing.
Teleport, though, rules. I find this spell usefull to lure groups of
monsters to their deaths. Instead of fighting hordes of them you can
teleport in and get some to follow. This is extremely usefull against
diablo. I can actually kill all of the monsters in his room, and then
go after him. Teleport is also extrodinary in multiplayer games. It is
damn hard to kill a mage with teleport and a high level fireball. He
can port around and wait for a chance to hit. Pretty devastating.

I had the same problem, magic really is a big must in this game,
especially hell, I am a lev 27 warrior. I can stroll around the top
levels with just my bare nuckels, but as soon as I went to hell, I was
useless. There where these wizzards, and winged women, every time I
approche the women they run away, and every time I approche the wizards
they teleport. I was useless. So I started the dungeon again, collected
every thing and every gold pence in the place, and bought the witch out
of magic elixers, found loads of books. Now when I meet these evil
bast's I can use lightning, flame wave, flame wall, teleport. They don't
stand a chance! I think this would work for you as you sound like i did
a couple of days ago!

Level 5? Sounds like the Chamber of Bone (though that may be level 6) If
so, maybe you should read up on the matter (those of you who know how to
gain access know what I'm talking about. <G>)

Nope. It wasn't the Chamber of Bone. It was just ordinary level 5.

Phase is completely random. Right clicking in an general area (while
it might seem like you have more control), has no effect. teleport on
the otehr hand is completely guided, allowing you to teleport to any
clear spot you can point to with the mouse. They are both important
spells, especially later on in the game when you can use teleport to
bypass particularly nasty areas and attack from a different and more
favorable area. Phase is a great "break in case of emergency" spell,
particularly effective against pkillers using an edited blade (a la
the trainer). As for not being able to get to the stairs, that is
unusual, but I supose with their random generator is it possible, just
not plausible.

on level 5 is the quest to get valour.
chamber of bone is on level 6.

How does teleport work, differently from phasing ?

Phasing is essential for a wizard to duel with a warrior, which
allows u to keep a distance from the warrior to cast fireball,
teleport can also do the job, but phase will be more handy.

Well yeah..the last time I used phase to escape danger, it popped me
into a room filled with angry-looking acid-doggies. Then I phased
again, into the middle of a magma-demon convention. The third time I
phased back to the original place and barely got away alive =)
It's more of last-ditch-gamble for your life...may or may not be worth
it.

no it isn't
You will go through the wall you are facing...unless it is too thick, in
which case you get bounced backwards.

BTW, be very careful using phase on level 16, it can drop you into a
world of hurt.

Well if you have phase up. But think you have fireballs you might get
yourself in to some really bad places.
