Advice for Low level Mage

Hi all,

I have a level 16 fighter which is doing pretty good, so I decided to
start a Mage when i played on a different computer.

I have struggled to get to level 6 with this guy, and it seems i am
always very near death; every penny i get goes into healing and mana,
and i am constantly getting wiped out.

Does anyone have any tips for staying alive at the lower levels?
Certain spells, items, ways of killing monsters, etc.

Also, what is the advantage of increasing Magic level? I mean, other
than being able to cast certain spells, does it make spells more
powerful or anything?
I ask because I found a staff that gave me + 9magic, but i sold it
because I needed healing to stay alive. (hope that wasn't a mistake)

The fighter was much tougher, but I like the idea of being a powerful
mage also >:-]

Any help appreciated,

Tony

I know what you are going through. My mage has died several times. If you
can be patient, don't be afraid to run from overwhealming odds and you will
become very powerful.

I started a mage and managed to make it to 16th level before I
died. It was tedious and time consuming. I carried every item I found
out of the dungeon. As soon as I had all I could carry, I'd head back for
the stairs. When engaging in combat, I never used my weapon (If only a
wiz could use two shields), I only used spells. If I found a staff, I
would use and recharge it unitl there were a max of 5 charges left. Then
it would be sold. I only played for 1-2 hour periods, that way I didn't
make it to Laoric often, and I would never waste time with the butcher.
After I was about level 10, I would go to the catacombs. The only times I
had problems was being jumped by lots of acid beasts. If you ever get
chain-lightning, your problems are over.
I never buy items from Griswald, I only sell. And I never repair
unless I know the item will be with me for a long time (like the sword
of the stars I found when I was level 4).

It's a little tedious but you may want to get free healing from the town
healer.

Don't play your mage as if he was a warrior. As much as possible, take
monsters out from a distance. Let them chase you around a corner and blast
them with a couple of spells. Holy Bolt is best for the undead, Fire Bolt
for the rest. Bringing them round a corner also helps to line them in a
straight line, less chances of missing.

You should have no problems surviving if you're careful. I managed to do
it all the way to Diablo on Normal. Got him with a Staff of Holy Bolt.
I'm proud to say that I did it without cheating or getting any help from
those busybody, "I-only-want-to-help-newbies", cheat-in-player clothings,
Samaritans that plague the Battle.Net with their duped items.

Your spells don't get more powerful through increasing magic levels. That
only allows you to cast some of the more powerful spells, which
incidentally is VERY important for a mage. To make your spells more
powerful, you'll need to read more of the same books. Each time you read a
book, it increases your Spell Level (to a maximum of 15). Level 1 Firewall
spells burn for a few seconds, at level 13 they last something close to a
minute. A level 15 Fireball spell does close to 600 points of damage and
will usually kill more than a single monster at a time.

One other advantage of increasing your magic level is that it will really
boost your Mana Shield, if you don't know what it is, it transfers all
damage sustained by you to your mana instead of your life. So a mage with
mana of 500 will live a long time if his mana shield is cast.

Don't sweat it. You'll find more powerful ones. Staffs of Wizardry will
usually add 28 to your magic level.

So do I. At level 30 I can Waltz solo through Nightmare right up to the
level before Hell. After that I start to sweat. :-)

For a mage the first and of course last levels are the hardest.
As a mage you must not run out inot battle in a crowd , at least not
till you have mana shield and even then its not agreat idea.
You should get your strength up to 30 then concentrate totally on
magic. The more magic you have the more mana you have,
and when you get mana shield you will want to ahve as much as
possible. Read as many books as you find, avoid almost all shrines
especially random ones (which may reduce total mana permanently)
and concentrate on finding books and items that raise your strength
thus allowing you better armor, also items that increase mana or hp.
Concentrate on getting monsters one by one, and if you see one get a
book of mana shield, thats the biggining of the mages true power.

With a mage, there is one thing you will realize off the bat. That is,
you're always broke. Until you hit like, level 10, or even 15 sometimes,
you will just be flat broke. It's because when the fighter goes into battle
he hacks shit up, doesn't get bothered as much because he has higher hp,
and buys healing potions in town.

When a mage plays, he has less hp and has to cast spells to fight... So you
need more healing and you also need to buy mana potions. Sometimes you can
sneak a couple coins to buy a book if you find one in the witch's shop, but
only if you are higher level.

Increasing your magic gives you more mana, and lets you read/cast the
better books and spells. Increasing your spell level lets you cast the
spell with less mana, and increases the damage done by the spell (or other
things depending on ths spell). +9 magic in a staff is good since you don't
attack in hand to hand much, so you should find the best bonus you can in a
staff. One with a spell in it is best at low levels, since you can get off
like 40 spells without spending a point of mana.

In most RPG's mage's have some problem's at the beginning, but at
least they are the Myghty one's. All you need is the manshild.
For every point of Magic you gain 2 Mana, and Mana is all you need.
