I started a mage and managed to make it to 16th level before I
died. It was tedious and time consuming. I carried every item I found
out of the dungeon. As soon as I had all I could carry, I'd head back for
the stairs. When engaging in combat, I never used my weapon (If only a
wiz could use two shields), I only used spells. If I found a staff, I
would use and recharge it unitl there were a max of 5 charges left. Then
it would be sold. I only played for 1-2 hour periods, that way I didn't
make it to Laoric often, and I would never waste time with the butcher.
After I was about level 10, I would go to the catacombs. The only times I
had problems was being jumped by lots of acid beasts. If you ever get
chain-lightning, your problems are over.
I never buy items from Griswald, I only sell. And I never repair
unless I know the item will be with me for a long time (like the sword
of the stars I found when I was level 4).
