Serveral months ago there was a post about the names people give there characters and the reasons behind them. We have many new faces now, so I will ask and explain my own. I used to play DnD and I subscribed to TSR's magazine Dragon. A few years ago an editorial was written; the subject; developing a detachment from your character. The writer was one who really went into the develpoment, detailing everything. The DM he ran across was one who loved to throw the largest of challenges to his players. They off course ran headlong into each other. BAM! Character Death. This upset the writer but he plugged on and a few quick rolls came up with ELF2. Bam! Death of ELF2. This went on and on. Massive challenge followed by relentless determination. ELF3, ELF4, ELF5 etc, etc. What he ended up learning was, care about what you are doing, but remember it is just a game and not to get too worked up over. So as a reminder to myself I named my character Dayna after a thief character I had in a failed story, and 7 as a lucky number. But if she bites it, she is but one of a potential many. There is always another. My posting name, Erthbender, comes from a Marvel Superheros RPG character I had. He laid low in the group, but rushed out to retrieve fallen allies and back up people when things get rough. So what is your story? Erthbender Dayna7 on B net drop 2Dground from the address to reply

My names aren't really original =) Magician! is my sorcerer, and, well...:) PurpleDragon~ is my hack-rogue, and it's purple, it's a dragon, 'nuff said. Evul`Purple does this really need explaining? and so on -- "1998, the Year of Contrast, brought us Viagra and Linda Tripp." http://bounce.to/purple - go there. NOW. Let's see... names...
"Majestrix" comes from Marvel Comic's Uncanny X-Men, the Majestrix being
Lilandra or Deathbird (in most cases Lilandra), the ruler of the Shi'Ar
Empire.
"Time Goddess" was originally Ocean Goddess (my first B.Net character),
but my sister stole the name and wouldn't return it. So I got promoted (the
one thing the little runt was ever good for).
"Elementality" is a contraction of "elemental" and "mentality". I was
thinking of things to stick on the end of the first, and ended up with the
psyche of a universe wielder. I'm beginning to see a trend...
"Cal'Syee" is another from Marvel, because it sounds cool. It's what
Deathbird's name was before she was stripped of it by her parents- although
*technically* I found out about it during the Age of Apocalypse (Gambit and
the X-Ternals), and I don't think it was ever revealed in the current
universe or if she even lost it in AoA, so my story my not be completely
true.
Then I had a few randomly mixed words, like "Sky Song" and "Wind Rider".
And I think I was the Fuzzy Purple Bunny of Doom From the Outer Space of the
Fifth Dimension of Reverse Vampire-Zombie Slayers Who Are Not Related to
Winky for about three seconds, but that's a story that I am contractually
bound not to divulge. And who is Winky? Why, people simply call him Winky-
Winky, the Dust Bunny Slayer.
But he's not Elvis.
Really.

My posting name is Rob. Most people call me Rob. Some people who don't
know me too well call me Robert and I few I have known since childhood call
me Robbie. A few People I used to work with called me a certain nickname but
I'm not getting in to that. Overall every one really calls me Rob.
My offline character names are Rob for a warrior, Roberta for a Rogue,
Robert for a mage, Robbie for a Barbarian, Robin for a Bard, and Prince Ali
for a Monk (Kinda ran out of names there)
My Bnet characters are all taken from songs. Sultan'O'Swing(Was
Sultan'Of'Swing until I forgot the pass) pinball'wizard, and
Lucy'In'The'Sky. I also had a few others who no longer exist. Online I
mostly will go by either Rob or Sultan'O'Swing.

: <snip> : So what is your story? :> Well, -Tymme- is just suitably archaic spelling, but the name Tymme for a sorceror is directly taken from the sorceror Tim in the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. When I had long hair, I look a lot like the actor (Billy Connolly) who played the part, plus I am from Scotland and a fan of his from way back. My warrior, Skarphedhin, is named after the son of Njall in the Icelandic saga, who used to scare the daylights out of everyone by grinning at them. The scene in Njall's saga where he is absolute death on skis is just wonderful. This book alone is worth learning Old Norse for. <snip> My posting name, Chrystophylax, comes from an esoteric short story by J.R.R. Tolkein, called "Farmer Giles of Ham." Chrystophylax is an extremely devious dragon who figures prominently in the story. It is worth a read, if you can put your hands on it. It is in the Tolkein reader, i do beleive. As for my Diablo characters, there are Trismesjistus, Cattie-Brie, and Conhobair. Trismesjistus is old Greek, and means "Thrice Majestic." It was a name often appended to the god Hermes. He was called Hermes Trismesjistus, in some of the sources. Cattie-Brie is a character in R.A. Salvatore's Dark Elf series. She wields a magical bow with a quiver that never runs out of arrows. What better name for a rogue? Conhobair is the name of an Irish high king (semi-mythological, i.e. King Arthur...). The descendents of Conchobair , of which I happen to be, (I'm waiting for my letter that says i am next in line for the Irish throne <g>) took the name O'Conchobair, meaning descendent of Conchobair, which has been Anglicized to "Conner," which happens to be my surname. And now you know :)

R-Dog is my post name and it's short for Reservoir Dog which is the name of my fantasy baseball team, the Reservoir Dogs. That name is from the Quentin Tarantino movie by that name. Cuchoolan is a Celtic mythical figure. It's usually spelled Cuchulain, but B.net wouldn't let me have that. The Cuchoolan spelling is from Frank McCourt's book, Angela's Ashes. The "ch" is a gutteral "h" sound, so it's pronounced Coo - HOO- lan. Sun_Ra is the name of a deceased improvisational jazz musician. He is known for his long nonsensical monologues and coined the phrase, "Space is the place." That's all I have on B.net, but future characters will all be jazz music names. My name is James. When on b.net ((starcraft)) people didn't want to waste time by writing it out so they wrote J. My freind started using it and eventually I came to be called Jay (When I said J they assumed it to be short for Jay). One day, on AHSC there was a guy, also by the name of Jay, trying to be an imposter of me. I found out very soon becuase he posted newbie stuff and made stupid comments towards Ng elders. I asked him to please change his name a his trying to be an imposter wasn't very comfortable for me. He cursed me out. So instead of taking offense I just changed my name to The Real Jay. Once I announced the name change he never posted again. Weird. (Absolutely true story. Well, I use Rich)G( for my talking Golem (warrior) because, oddly enough it's the name I post under and I get confused trying to keep track of people's names. : ) There is a terrible rumor that someone is logging on from my account as BKDaemon, but I would certainly never take that name as my own as that would mean that I had created a character for the soul purpose of destroying barrels. It would also imply that there were some games where I went through and killed barrels only and didn't kill monsters. I am trying to keep my probation in the DoW as short as possible so wouldn't take part in any of this sort of terrible behavior. I can't believe someone would use my account to do this, but there's no end to what those evil critters over in the LOS will do. Hopefully that rumor has been put to rest now. -- Rich G. I am the wizard of what was. I started repairing old Nova 1200 computers in the mid 70's, and became one of the best in the country at doing what I did. I had to repair everything on the system (cpu's, monitors, tape drives, disc drives, plotters, digitizers, printers). And when I say repairing, I mean down to the chip lvl. Anyway to make a long story short, the technology today has put me out of work. That's where the "was" comes from. The Wizard comes rom a cartoon I saw on a customers bulletin board, of a Wizard waving a magic wand at a cpu to fix it. The caption read, " I don't know, but I think he's from CV." and somebody had penciled in "Fast Eddie? Charlie?" Well the Sys. Mgr. saw me looking at it, and I said "I take it that that is a complement." And he said that it was. So that is the story of my handle. Different and unique. As a side note, Fast Eddie taught me the first thing to do in computer repair. Be lazy, go for the easy stuff first. 90% of the time it's an easy fix. In and out and no call backs. I hated call backs. wizofwas Crush all of the evil barrels

Well... about a million years ago (or maybe more like 10) I spent a lot of time doing assorted BBS Games (aka door games). Favorites were Global Wars, Legend of the Red Dragon, TradeWars, etc. Anywho - there was this guy who was into Star Wars. This guy also annoyed me.... often. So, I decided my handle should be something that would really cheese him off. Thus, the name Handy_Solo was born. Ever since then its just kinda stuck... odd, eh? At least 10 years later I'm still using the silly thing. Next came the Rogue - Henrietta_Solo. Not much to explain. Just a play on the name. My mage is named Darken_Solo. Loosely based on Darken_Rahl (go read the Terry Goodkind series!). A friend already had the name Darken_Rahl - and I seemed to be gravitating to '_Solo' so there you go. erthbender@aol.com2Dground (Erthbender) wrote: > > Serveral months ago there was a post about the names people give there > characters and the reasons behind them. After giving up my evil ways, I decided to take a name with some humor or to have a cast of characters that people could identify with. I mean after swimming through the public channels and public games and seeing names that were as common as cock roaches or had no originality, I wanted to create something that was original. I mean a Rogue that had an eye problem, you have to see the irony there. Or a mage that was so inept that he can not solve his wife's bad cooking or even worse, a mild case of Dysentery. Or a Warrior who has to wear Depends because of a weak bladder. These are characters that are to poke fun both at the game as well at the creator, for me it is a rise when someone would address me at Best Buy, "Damn, your Dysentery_Bob?!?" Or even better would recognize my creation from AGD. Last of all, I believe that its is far better to pick a name that had humor and showed that I am fun to play with and that I can take a joke, damn if you look at all the past posts here, you can see how many posts that poked fun at my creations. Though I know it JEALOUSY that make those very weak people make fun at what they don't understand or comprehend. :-P Anyway who wants to be known as GOD or some other name that tries to inspire awe or fear, but only makes one laugh at such a unimaginative name. BTW : PLEASE dont be offended in what I say, this is all the thoughts I had bouncing around in my head or to put it better its all IMHO. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mike who has a Lazy Eye, suffers from Dysentery which forces him to wear Depends, but all of these problems can be traced to his being Inbred. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmm. My posting name is Derek K. because, well . . . it's me name. My b.net characters have morphed a lot, but my current names that I've played for a while now are Eshu-Nae'Blac, Kylea-Nae'Blac and T'lann-Nae'Blac. Started out with Eshu - mythical wandering figure type thing, also a type of fae in Changeling: The Dreaming. And a very spiffy sounding name, I thought. Then, once I made a new character, Kylea (Rogue - just sounded nifty) I decided to give them all a last name so that it would be easy to tell they were related. Then my mage came around (T'lann - just sounds vaguely eastern, and I like it), got the last name. Not real creative like. My Ret. rogue was named Slythe, after another mythological being, my monks tend to be named Horus, Anibus, etc - Egyptian gods and the like. Hmm. Cheers, Derek K. -=-=- If voting could change things, it would be illegal

My family is somewhat, hrm, interested with its history. We have done a good bit of research on the subject. The story of King Conchobair, king of the Irish, is a matter of historical fact. Feel free to look it up (as I have done). Now I don't mean to claim royal descent (although it is possible, I guess, and wouldn't that be cool) as the name Conner has arisen from a couple of other unrelated places. But everything I said is a matter of historical fact, and has nothing to do with any "print out your family history" computer at a tourist site anywhere.
