I have kept my stuff on levels other than 16 and even in Nightmare
diff.  Not sure what the what the criteria, but at one point I thought
it was the speed you entered restart-in-town.  Quit trying when I hit
new-game by mistake.... boy it really sucks to loose everything.  What I
would give for a confirmation "Are you sure you want to leave 35K gold
and 10 great items on when you leave Mr 37 lvl sorc?  It will take you
weeks to get all the stuff back....naw well just go anyway....bye"  Not
to mention the cost of a new monitor when I put my fist thru it....(just
kidding).
