question about D1

I've returned to D1 after years of playing D2. 
I'm in a multi-player game at battle-net with a friend of mine. He is
a warrior, I'm a Rogue.
Unfortunately, even tho it appears we are on "friendly" setting, my
arrows shoot him and damage him, when I am firing at a monster he is
attacking.
Is there any way to prevent this, besides not firing at monsters that
are near him?
