Okay, Gharbad the weak makes items.  Go back to him, he will whine more 
about not killing him.  Keep going back to him, and he will tell you that 
he's making another item.  Eventually he will say that the item is just 
too good to give to you, and he will attack.  Slay him and take the 
item.  The second item he gives you is usually pretty cool.

Whenever you see a section of any level you cannot get into, look for a 
book to read.  It will usually tell you about something (ie.  halls of 
the blind) and then the area will open up.

I found the Magic rock in the first levels of the Catacombs on a table 
(the only table in the entire game!).  You get an emperyan ring from 
Griswold.
