Thanks to those who suggested ways to overcome this dilemma.
Blizzard couldn't solve my problem and after two tries asked me to
return my disk. But, in the meantime, I decided to replace Win 95 with
Win 98.

After wiping my c drive and loading Win 98, I tried to run the game
from my (unchanged) d drive, where I had installed it originally. Got
the prompt to insert the CD and the game ran just fine. No reinstall
necessary. Lazarus attacked and all went as advertised. Completed the
alter level, returned, entered the now lit pentagram, descended,
cleared most of the maze, found the big red devil, my warrior popped
him (literally) with the Jade hammer, and watched the video.

Now I want to try the sorcerer.
