Hi...

I just googled my name to see how old my posts are to this NG.
I found one from '96 in December. That means I have been reading this
group continuously over 8 years.

I know that the chatter about Descent here is dead. Are there
any other old timers here that still read the group, or am I the last
one? If I don't get a reply in about two weeks I'll just turn off the
lights and lock the door on the way out.

There haven't really been many important developments, at least none that
made it's way here.

You could view the web-forums, even if you need to register...

I probably don't qualify as an oldtimer and never posted much, but I've
been around watching this place since 1998. But, yeah, this place is
pretty much dead - generally, not just Descent-wise - and has been for
a while. :\
Anyone else still around?

I played Descent from the shareware and loved Descent II as well. I've
visited this NG on and off since 97 and subscribed to the DDL (Descent
Developers List) at one time.

Anyone remember the "Descent Levels of the World" add on pack?
It was the result of a competition. I used D.E.V.I.L. to produce my
entry: "Cicero Outpost".

My Descent player id was "Cicero" needless to say.

The "ciqret" handle here was only used about twice when playing Quake
after which I reverted back to Cicero for that too.

For whatever reason I've decided to post as ciqret on NGs recently ..

How's that for a rambling answer?

I can't claim the honor of producing new content (kudos to Cicero!) but
I played Descent1 shareware for hours every day over dos-based PPP dialup
scripts (co-op play beating all 7 levels and the magnificent final shareware
boss: unforgettable) , and bought Kali soon after Noone (I forget his real
name now, Joe Cotton or somesuch?) discovered an assembly level bug in the
popular free PPP package that most people used back then, and compensated
for it in his code (#286, and #29 Kahn also :) )

Descent2 was similarly exciting, with the wonderful gauss gun,
co-operating to open hidden doors, and playing Hoard levels.

#descent on efnet IRC was also a rocking place, with intense channel
takeover battles occurring weekly, and tons of game and level discussion,
with Parallax developers often making an appearance.

Nice! LOTW was included in the Infinite Abyss D2 box wasn't it?

The oldest posting that I could find from me
was dated Feb 8 1998.
Do I qualify as an "Old Timer"?

I was using an email account over dialup on FLashnet back then.
Don't think they even exist anymore.

Hi CJ...

Sorry this is so long, I am feeling philosophical tonight.

Yep. It seems to me that I got lots of tips and help from
this NG. Like I said I think I started out here in '96. I liked
being here so much that I never bothered with the DescentBB. Back
then I was connecting to the Internet on my brand spankin' new and
howling fast 14.4 Kbps modem. The BB loaded slow, and multiplayer was
impossible between my dialup and my HP 486 DX/2 running Win 95
upgraded from 3.1. Goodness things have changed!

Anyway, I have always enjoyed the helpful community feel at
this NG. Even when ZOD wasted our bandwidth, and when MOON started
getting testy and just posted "Check my website!" posts to every
question. I loved his website, I even went back there a couple of
months ago for fun. I also seem to remember HHSoft was particularly
helpful.

Now it's 9 years since that poor little 486 chugging along and
making my first Descent 1 demo look like the future of all gaming. I
know that by today's standards the graphics would be called apalling,
but then I looked in wonder as I could rotate and slide on all 3 axes,
battling evil machines and rescuing captured humans. Considering the
alternative at the time was pretty much DOOM or Wolfenstein (The
original, kiddies) it seemed like a more moral choice of game for a
fps or even for a space sim.

Anyway, I guess I am trying to wrap up my thoughts because I
am finally coming to terms with the fact that there is no D4 coming, I
have beaten the games and the add-ons, my life is busied up too much
to really play the game anymore, and it is time for me to unsubscribe
and move on. I realize this is silly. I am just having a hard time
getting away from my emotional attachment to this NG. This has kinda
been a special corner of the internet for me. I wouldn't call it
home, but maybe my cyber cabin by the lake. I felt a certain
friendliness toward the ones that have come by here. Even with the
spammers and the screamers and the scammers, it has been a good place
to look into every day. I have read more here than any news source or
periodical I have ever seen. I have played our game and read this
group longer than my last pastorate (8 years, finished up last year
and moved here).

I have no idea if anyone else cared if I was here, but I felt
an affinity with other Descent players that came here. I liked you
guys, all.

There, that said, I guess it is time to go. To our community
of players, I say goodbye. It has been a great ride to be connected
with you as fellow players and enthusiasts. To those who programmed
our game, to the level designers, to the game writers and scripters,
to the 3D modellers, the beta testers, and my fellow enthusiasts, I
thank you for your efforts and input. It is my hope that in your walk
through life you will take the time to slow down from your frantic
pace and hear Jesus, the Good Shepherd, calling you to Himself. It is
my hope you do so that in eternity we can meet again and get to know
each other. Thanks for reading this to the last line. Hope the top
posting didn't bug you too much, it is just a more logical way to do
Usenet.

With much love in Jesus Christ.

They were bought by Prodigy, which was then bought by SBC/Yahoo.

I stilll monitor it. I started with D1, worked up to D3 (never could
complete the final level, even in cheat mode.
Online pllay was fun until the server disappeared. so I don't even
thing I have it loaded any more. Maybe it's time to start over..
For some reason, the current crop pof first person shooter games just
don't excite me. Perhaps Decent's illusion of flight was the key..

The oldest one I could find is from January, 1st 1996 not counting the one
from December 24th, 1995 in comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action dealing with
Descent as well. Quite some time that is...

Well, it's still in my newsreader but since there's not much happening here
and in the Descent world I agree that it's dead. However, ocasionally we
still play D3 on LAN parties and I'll always remember those as the good
times ;)

There are still people that play D1X online. I play D3 online most days.
There is a Doom3 mod in the works for Descent.

Though I despise being in the same sentence with ZOD I still stand for my
actions from back then. I STILL think it's annyoing to have ppl around who
do not BOTHER to take a look at Google and see if their question already
has been answered which it most likely has. And NO, I don't see that as an
interesting discussion either. There are a lot of other Descent related
topics ppl could have been talking about to keep this group alive rather
than "how do I free dr. Switzer" for the umpteenth time. People are lazy

Actually it kinda still is when you compare it to today's games simply
because it was almost perfect. Remember Doom's klutchy approach at
networking and how easy it was to join a game already in progress with
Descent? Well also had a nice screenshot for every save game to load and
the user friendliness of demo function is even better than Descent 3's. Add
to this the option to save sceenshots that you could view with the free
'pxview' and an amazing gameplay I'm not surprised ppl return to this game.

Another game from that era which I had almost as much fun with in terms of
gameplay was Duke Nukem 3D! I'm still waiting for someone to come up with a
nice new version similar to jDoom so I can play L.A. Rumble on a LAN party
with my friends.

I can't comment on the rest of your posting cause it's making me sad too...

I'm still here. At least I'm still searching KALI for anyone who will
play Descent 1,2 or 3. I check the chat rooms occasionally to see if
anyone would like to play. They just get mad when I interrupt ther
perverted chat.

Well, I'm getting old at 49. And I guess I can call myself an old timer in
relation to Descent. I got hooked on a demo of Descent 1. (Descent 3 didn't
work for me.) I've looked in here on occasion over the years, although I
don't know how many. Wistfully, I just sort of hope that I'll see some good
news about Descent. Of course, I am a realist. It's been dead for a while
and those who killed it just can't get around their issues, and the stinky
capitalism, so as to help us out here. But I just don't get how a dynamite
game like this - nothing on offer today interests me in the least - could go
belly up. Was it not profitable?

It was fun and I didn't have to kill or rape intelligent, er flesh and
blood, beings. Oh well.

I'm still here. I just fired up Decent Demo on XP and my old IBM laptop.
Wow... It was Retro!. No Sound but plenty of old fun. No Stick either! Now,
I have the bug and want to try d2 on XP and compile the d2x to see if I can
get it to run. I lost all my old CD's and was wondering if there is a way to
make this work??
Anyone??

Hi... Going retro here too after reading this NG.
I found my old DescentI and DescentII packaged in a trifold CD holder! I
have also been downloading on eMule the Descent3 game and got this running
on XP also. I loaded the recoded version of DescentII and have been checking
this out for fun. All my old equipment is gone, ie: FlightStick! Keyboard
only stuff now.... but it works and gave me a rush.
Yes, Kali and online with those HUGH multiplayer rooms and trying to just
stay alive for more than 5 minutes without getting trashed. Some of the
multiplayer rooms I used to compete in were huge! A lot of fun and memories.

Yup there are still some old farts on here. I'm kind of a lurker and rarely
post.
I usually play one of the games here (D3 that is)
http://d3.descent.cx/tracker.d3
Never got the full version of D2 just the demo. Shame you can't adjust the
video settings on that.
and oh wow D1, I remember playing that over the modem with my buddy across
the street way back when...
I was Dscntman back then. :->
Look for the "Over the Hill Gang" servers - lots of old farts like me in
there LOL.
PS - Thanks for being considerate enough to hit the lights and lock up.

?

You can buy the D2 CD or any Descent collection pretty cheap on Ebay or
elsewhere and then use D2X (http://www.icculus.org/d2x/) which allows you
to play this game in several resolutions under XP just like D1X.

Thanks - I'll look into that. I love the site by the way been there a few
times.
You always beat me to the punch answering D3 help questions here though.
I DO NOT want to play you in a game if you're that quick LOL.

Oh here's a question I just thought of, I played a D3 Mercenary CO-OP one
time and the host of the game said he hacked the level to allow Co-Op when I
asked "How is this a co-op?". I would love to get my hands on that co-op
version of Merc. I tried to edit the levels with the editor that is all
over the D3 sites, but to no avail. Know anyone or anywhere I can download
that Co-Op version ?
Thanks

I don't know where you can get it but you might find someone to help you
out with hacking that level yourself on the DBB. I'm not sure, maybe all
you gotta do is set the flag to cooperative when compiling the hog file
with D3Edit.

Yeah I tried that briefly (briefly meaning I messed with it for a few nights
several hours each and got frustrated with the error messages, etc., and
quit) LOL
I'm no programmer I guess - I won't give up the day job just yet.
I'll check out the DBB when I get some time - Thanks

I check in once or twice a year ;)

I remember playing the demo on a 486. Posting to some old BBS group.

I recall there was a steep learning curve at first and the no save
feature on the demo probably turned off a lot of people.

My fav was the 3dfx version of D1. Upgraded my computer and haven't
gotten around to reloading current versions of descent. Been too busy
with the frag cannon in unreal tourny.

Haven't found anything to compare with descent though.

It's a classic.

Well, can't remember which version I started with, the 1.4 demo patch added
save functionality though.

Gentlemen:

I have checked this news group from year to year to see what was going on. I
had to stop playing Descent on my old computer, it just couldn't keep up
with the graphics. But that was 8 years ago?

I started to miss Descent after playing Halo for the last year, and looking
at the crop of games available at the local store. It makes me sad how
pitiful the selection is now days. After playing Doom III half way through
I took it off my computer and threw it away - to weird for me. I tried
playing Breed, didn't like being called a dumb-ass for getting all my crew
killed. Then their is Call of Duty, you have to really get into it to be
any good, I keep getting killed. I'll get into another day. I want to
purchase half-life, but $55.00 is a bit much. I'm waiting for Halo 2.

I started to remiss the old Descent game, I love the flying around in the
spaces it offers. So I dropped by last month and saw a patch for WIN XP and
started to play D2 again. What fun! Makes me sad for the current crop of
games on the market. Went through D2 then Vertigo. However, I am missing
something.

I've been expecting to play a level where their are these little men in
robes walking around that you are not suppose to shoot on the way to killing
everything else. And there was this level where you were inside caves and
then outside in this mountain range, where you blew up this space ship in
the end. (A demo was available on this level.) Then there was a couple
other levels I remember playing that I have not come across. Is their a D
III that I no longer have? I've searched everything I have, must have
loaned it out and it never came back. Boy, I hate that.

I've seen too much good software loose support and disappear from the
market.

Bill

Descent 3, level 6.

If you're talking about a UFO blown up than it was Descent 3 demo 1.
