I bought D3, but didn't like it much and D1 was very difficult at times, even when playing on rookie difficulty. D3's biggest problem for me was the new 3d-engine, with all the lighting effects and so on. I simply couldn't find my way around the different levels. It didn't have the Descent 'feel' to it, I think. I still play D2 single player on occasion. Love it. Claus

Having played D1, D2 and D3, i still like the game play in D2 the most because it was such much richer (water, weapon, enemies) than D1 which was then seen as just an other doom-spin off. Unfortunately, at least in my (humble) option ;-), D3 was not such step forward. The graphics are much nicer and the enemies are much more clever, but the game did not be come more fun. It even think it has some downers like the fact you _can_ play out side but there is a 'glass ceiling' and of cause those anoying turrets, which can only shot away with a vaus, while you are shot to pieces .... However, i have start playing d3 again after ordering d3 mercenary ... hoping it will be better ;-) ... yeah i have seen the reviews ... happy mining. aam

The general story was that its nothing new compared to the D3, just more of the same (i hope there is no train station or subway in it). The game was not expensive ... and i haven't played Descent for a while so i ordered it ... and now ... i have to wait until they have imported it ... still two weeks to wait :-( greetings.

There's nothing horrible about D3, and the story is certainly more
substantive than the earlier games.
Gameplay-wise, I've been playing it on this very fast modern system at
1600x1200 (with my standard mouse+keyboard config), and the controls are
very twitchy and aiming is difficult. I blame the mouse driver code more
than anything, as proper acceleration curves aren't easy to set up so you
get precision with small movements while not requiring much lifting of the
mouse for big turns. I had this well-adjusted back in the day with
command-line DOS mouse driver parameters and the 3dfx version of D2, but oh
well.
Modern FPS games have superior mouse code, but the Descent developers
never really gave respect to mousers, not even bothering to fix the
framerate issue in either D1 or D2; all their effort went into pleasing
stick users. Oh well, sometimes trying different mice can help, I'm
thinking of getting the MX1000 for my next mouse, if they make a tailed
version :) This Explorer4 is ok, but does have glaring flaws.

Tried D2, gagged on the cheap ugly textures. Found the 3dfx patch for D1 and played that since. Picked up D3 for $9, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Kinda stuck on Unreal Tourney these days.
