I was never able to get my old Sidewinder 3D Pro to work on my new (now not-so-new) computer with a double-pumped FSB of 133 MHz. I tried everything I could think of, including the "fix" on Mickey$oft's Sidewinder page...it was a .vxd driver file as I recall. It didn't work. Has anyone had luck with getting the old SW3DPRO working on the newer computers? I gave up a long time ago, but maybe now someone has an idea I could try? I have an IWill KK266 board, which uses the Via KT133A chipset and an SB Live! sound card with a gameport on board. I don't like the newer Sidewinder and the nostromo + mouse configuration has some drawbacks. I'd like to have my old configuration back, if possible. I only have--what?--ten Sidewinder 3D Pros. :)

My old SW 3d PRO is still in great shape and my favourite. On my old Win 98 Presario 7947 (Athlon 650 Hz) I got it working fine, but I think it took several attempts for Windows to recognize it. I ended up using the old drivers that came with it - after trying the newer one (unsuccessfully). On my current machine (Win XP on athlon 1.6Ghz) I had to install a separate sound card (SB Live) in order to get a game port. (I had my favourite SW PRO plus a MIDI keyboard that needed it ). It recognized it, installed the drivers - NO Problems!! with Win2k or WinXP you don't have any problems. also if you boot into win2k(or XP) and then reboot into win98, this will also temporarily fix the problem. That's great! I actually bought several backups because I love this joystick so much. Unfortunately, it's been two years since I've been able to use it. :( The difficulty isn't in the CPU, but in the speed of the front-side bus. Some people have been able to find work-arounds (the .vxd file, for example) when encoutering this problem. Me? No luck. I may try again just for the hell of it. I'll also try again when I get a mobo / CPU/ RAM upgrade. If that doesn't work, I may consider building a system for Descent only...LOL! 100 MHz FSB only. :) On Wed, 11 Jun 2003 17:48:59 -0400, "Roger B" <xyzzz_...@sympatico.ca> wrote: >My old SW 3d PRO is still in great shape and my favourite. Thats the only known solution to this Bug in W98. The workaround for this problem is done by installing the SW 3D Pro as a Thrustmaster Joystick WITH rudder. Doing so results in a working 3D Pro without the base switches and a 4 way hatswitch.

After letting my Sidewinder 3D Pro sit on ice for two years, I tried again and it worked immediately. Same mobo, same everything, except for one thing: I'm now using Windows XP. Go figure.
