When I first started to play Descent deathmatch, I was in agreement with most regarding the lack of open areas in the shareware levels. However, afer many hours of deathmatch, I can see the value in the corridor portions. This variation in areas allow me to mix up my strategy based on the opponent. Even while playing, I find that constantly mixing it up creates for a better game. Some of the most heart stopping games I've played involved the corridor areas. This is especially true when a "tug of war" developes - each player taking and losing ground. Intentionally backing off, in order to confuse or seek better position. Oops, I hope no one on cris.com is reading this, they'll have me figured out :) John.
