I am curious as to whether there will ever be a non-DOS port of Descent. I asked sup...@interplay.com, but never received an answer (I also sent them other questions and never received answers also). I would be willing to make a level editor running under X on Linux, but I am not willing to reboot the machine to try and test the level out. Terry Evans tev...@cs.utah.edu

Most of the DOS4GW games have been working since dosemu0.53.48.
They're due to release 0.60 on April 1st (supposedly stable release).
Among other things, the docs with 0.53.54 state:
- Runs several 32-bit DPMI-compilant video games, including DOS/4GW,
at the Linux console. A partial list of successfully tested games
includes DOOM2, Heretic, Descent, MK2, OMF2097, ROTT, and WarCraft!
I've been able to get it to start, but it's pretty slow, and I've had
some problems with keyboard control (on a 486-33 with 8 MB) as well
as frequent lockups. According to the EMUsuccess.txt file,
xp...@sun.felk.cvut.cz has been able to get it to work since 0.53.49,
so this would probably be the best person to contact.
BTW, dosemu's official site is at tsx-11.mit.edu in
/pub/linux/ALPHA/dosemu, with the really unstable versions in the
Development directory.

As your example clearly indicates, anybody willing to buy Descent is going to be willing to spend a minute rebooting their Intel machine into DOS to play it. I have to disagree here. I know more than a few people who won't even go
near dos! I would love to see a Linux Descent! Then I would be able to
play over the net!! :-) There are many people who would buy a linux descent
but who would not bother for a dos version!

> > Has anyone out there tried Descent under dosemu? After my original post, I decided to try it. Descent under Dosemu on my DX4/100 is about as fast as running it under DOS on my DX2/66 system. Not only does Descent run, but so does DOOM, DOOMII and Heretic. As well as the Watcom 10.0a compiler, but not the linker (dang!). However, don't try to run Descent on a DX2/66 under Dosemu. It is way slow! Terry Evans tev...@cs.utah.edu p.s. I was using the lastest version of Dosemu that I could find on ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/ALPHA/dosemu/Development (or something like that).
