Something to try - unlike most people I use the twist for sliding left and
right, rather than banking. This helps whip around corners extremely fast
and come out facing down the next hall. My hat banks left/right (since I
only use that occasionally to stay right-side-up) and slides up/down.
Handle is left/right/up/down.

My keyboard, in case you care:
A bomb/mine switch
S drop bomb/mine
D backward
F forward
I use QWER and ZXCV for headlight, energy>shile converter, etc. This allows
me to keep my left hand on one spot on the keyboard all the time, and being
on the home (D)key with the bump makes it even easier to stay in the right
place. I used a bunch of different setups until I came up with this; it's a
little weird but I can move in any combination of directions I've ever
wanted.

I suggest you use the stick in mode 2, without the throttle, so you have
multiple buttons at once. I used to use the throttle, and found out my left
hand was much more useful on the keyboard. Also, David was right about not
using the MS drivers - just set it as a thrustmaster or whatever in Descent.
