Yeah -- it's a very common problem. The FILES= setting in your CONFIG.SYS is too low. You need at least FILES=30, preferably more for safety. This only used to affect me when I was using my "stripped to the bare metal" configuration to free up all possible resources, since that was using the default DOS setting of FILES=8. This was bad.
