network game problems...c&c generals.

Hello all,

I continually have a lockup on a 2 pc home network. I have a Linksys
router. One pc has WinXP and the other is Win98se. They have all the
standard file and internet sharing attributes. Everything goes as it should
except for C&C Generals. At what seems any random time during the game, it
will drop usually the Win98 machine. Its an 1800+ AMD, 256K ram, Geforce MX
400 w/64meg. Not cutting edge, but certainly a good playable game. The
other WinXP is 2000+ AMD, 768k ram, Ati 9500 pro w/128meg.

The problem doesnt seem to have any regularity like big battles or the like.
Both pc's can handle that pretty well. I can usually resume the game myself
on the Winxp machine, but the other has to restart Generals to play again.
It becomes frustrating.

I know the Geforce card has some heat issues at time. But this can occur on
good conditions as well (cool pc, freshly booted). The game can be played
on either machine fine as solo playing games.

The Win98se is a fresh install of the OS and drivers. The WinXP has a
little cleaning up to do but runs fine as is. Both have a fresh reload (of
Generals (different copies) and current updates as well.

Any ideas for solutions?

Thanks all,
SL

you left out a couple of things. What type of network adapters are you
using? And when you say it drops the game, do mean it just loses it's
network connection, or does the game just crash and dump you back to the
windows desktop?

sorry...away from pc for a while. Anyways, I have the following:

Abit KD7A motherboard with built in Nic: VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter

ASRock Motherboard with built in Nic: I believe a Realtek card

Linksys BEFSR41 4-port router.

I dont have any other sort of network problems. Just my favorite game :(

I have since rebuilt the suspect pc with fresh XP pro rebuild and it also
got a new nvidia fx 5200 video card. I know its no powerhouse, but better
than the gx440 card it had.

I have yet to try a game out, but I will soon and repost. Any other ideas
though for me to consider?

thanks,
SL
