Flickering sprites and lockups during network play

hello,
I have been experiencing random lockups while playing c&c generals and
zero hour. This only happens while playing network games.
I have tried the following so far, and the problem still exists.
- Reinstalled windows me several times
- Reinstalled Generals and Zero Hour several times
- Installed latest graphics drivers for ati radeon 9000 atlantis pro
- Installed latest lan drivers for realtek 8139 lan chip
- Installed Directx 9.0b
- Installed latest via 4in1 chipset drivers
- Booted with failsafe settings in bios
- Tried playing through a firewall (using PortOverride)
- Traced network packets through firewall for malicious connections
- Played through a modem directly connected to the computer
- Turned hardware acceleration down under "desktop settings"
- Set gfx options in Generals to custom and unchecked everything

The problem still exists. Is this a known problem, or am I just a
lucky customer of an impossible hardware combination?

This morning I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled c&c generals,
the 65542_65536_english patch, directx 9.0b, the latest via4in1
drivers,
the latest radeon 9000 drivers, the latest realtek sound drivers, the
latest realtek lan drivers and lauched Generals.

At the opening menu screen all the "moving" images on the screen
flicker in-and-out. For example, a helicopter flies in over the
group of tanks and trucks in the middle, and all that is visible
is the rotor-blade, but for a few brief seconds the helicopter body
itself is visible.

There is also a "flashing effect" going on as the screen rotates that
looks somewhat like lightning. Again, is this a known problem, or
am I just a lucky customer of an impossible hardware combination?

thanks,
bl8n8r

Try unchecking "See Units Behind Buildings" in the advanced graphics options
(options->select "custom" level of detail). See this support article for
details:

Whoops, missed the part where you said you tried unchecking everything.
Nevermind. I don't have any other ideas except to try contacting EA or ATI
support (but if you contact EA, try to hold your temper because no doubt they
will first ask you to reinstall and update your drivers - eventually they may
have something more for you).

I haven't heard of this problem before. Sometimes network games are a
little more stressful on a computer and will cause it to lock up when single
player won't.

one other thing: Realtek, they have been known to cause all kinds of
problems in various network games

My brother and myself have the same problem. We kept blaming the video
cards, network setup etc... Reinstall both systems from scratch and still
the same problem. Both systems have WinXPro runnin....

Does this game and setup just simply have a problem they need to work out?
Im tired of spending weekends rebuilding a machine or two to find out the
same thing. A weakness I can understand. Heck, Ive got at least two myself

I have no problems with network play other than a bit of a slowdown when the
action gets heavy. no flickering or anything though.

One PC is a 2.8g p4 with a gig of ram and a 9700pro (3.7 cat), the other is
a 1333 t-bird, 640 of ram and a ti4400 (52.16 dets)
both running XP Home with SP1 and realtek 8139 network cards (505 drivers)

Hello all. Thanks for the suggestions. They were some good food
for thought. I played two games of C&C generals last night _without_
any problems.

- I removed Directx 9.0b. This meaned reinstalling windows again.
Microsoft has apparently thought it neccesary to "tie" directx 9
  "into" the operating system.

- Installed Directx 8.1 from the generals CD

- Installed my *OLD* video drivers for my radeon 9000 sapphire pro card.
The newest drivers from the ATI website only use dx9.0.

- Installed generals. Things worked for two games without locking up.

So the question is, why does it work now? A couple things that may be
the problem.

1) I always install "bundled" software (like video drivers), with the "custom"
option. This way, I can always say "No" to all the extra fluff that these
programs want to install. C'mon guys, just install the video drivers. I do
not want to install Acrobat reader, or IE6.

I was sick of installing software all weekend and just hit the "express"
install button - it installed all the eye-candy and desktop clicky things
at startup, but something I hadn't noticed before is that the extra settings
for openGL, etc now showed up in the desktop settings dialog box. Interesting.

2) Using the updated video drivers from the ATI website required that I install
Directx 9. The package I grabbed from download.com was Directx 9b,
    suggesting beta software I suppose.

3) I also noticed, the 1280x960 video option is not an option in the Generals
video mode option pulldown. Perhaps the 9000 pro card does not run well
with this game at that resolution.

So, in short, with a lot of head scratching and supposing, I think all the problems
I was having were directly related to the video drivers and directX. This includes
the unexplicable network play lockups (while offline skirmishes worked fine).
It all magically works now.

Thanks for all the replies.

as long as it works, all it cool ;o)

btw; dx 9.0b is not beta, that is the latest official release from
microsoft. the b is because it is just a very minor upgrade for minor bug
fixes from the previous version. thus not justifying a version number
update.

Do you have interlace turned on in your video card settings? If so, turn it
off.

What your describing sounds like something I read in a tech doc for the game
somewhere and it got lodged in my brain.

Good luck,

- Phil

Thanks for the note, Phil. It all appears to be working for now, so
I will keep it in mind.
