yes, it is excruciatingly slow in network play, regardless of the computers
or speed of lan. Not only is it slow, but it gets laggy at times if there is
much going on, even when the slowest computer is an xp2000 with 512mb of ram
and the server is a p4 3.4ghz w/1gb ram ;o(

So that's just it? I just got the game and it runs brilliantly in single
player on my 2.8c with 5900 Ultra but while online play seems fine, once
a little action starts, it CRAWLS.

I've got the 1.6 patch so i guess there is nothing more I can do. Anyone?

I've played in huge 8 player games during our LAN parties, and it runs just
fine for us.

Maybe it has more to do with your network setup than the game. I would
recommend removing any superfluous network protocols and make sure none of
the PC's are running anything that uses the network connection (like P2P
software, Firewalls, etc.).

I'm just running tcp/ip, static addressing and a default gateway of my
router, could the gateway be interfering? dhcp is disabled and i dont
think dns is relevant, what else is there?
