I hear stuff about a tunnel rush in C&C Generals/Zero Hour, what is it and why is everyone bitching about it?

Pump out tanks and stuff through the tunnel while contuinuing to strengthen the position by building more tunnels / stinger sites etc. Not what you would call a "clean" tactic but then the USA rush in Generals with a construction dozer in a Chinook straight into your base at the start to build patriots was the same thing. Not a cheat either way but damn annoying and spoil the flow of the game in my opinion. Doc

I see there is no point of playing against good (or even so so) GLA player when I play small 1on1 map if I am not GLA. this is cheap, it changed the balance of the game on GLA side too much earlier on game. there is no way I can think to go block someone from coming down to my base on 1 on 1 map and start rushing with tunnels, while I play as USA or china. EA should have consider this and should have made tunnel 1) more costly to build 2) slower to build 3) without 2 tank hunters right away, if they were going to build GLA tunnel so easy to build. I made it to CC in Geneals and am currently colonel, usually play china (infantry). there countless times I lost to newbie playing GLA in only map he choose to play because he knows it's easy to rush on that map. i sure as hell hope they change this in next patch.

A tunnel rush is when you load up a worker (or two) and perhaps a small diversion (terrorist, couple of rebels or RPG troopers) in some suitably fast vehicles (technicals or bikes), drive right inside the enemy base, and build a tunnel. With another tunnel network entrance right near your barracks or arms dealer, you pump units straight into your enemy's base. An enemy caught unprepared (i.e. with no good antibuilding units handy) will have a hard time destroying the tunnel. The reason it, like all other rushes (e.g. the China dragon & gattling rush), is unpopular is because it very often catches people completely unawares and is difficult to stop. Most people consider defeating your opponent in the first five minutes a display of poor sportsmanship rather than high skill. EA has adjusted the time to build a tunnel in several patches as a result of complaints about this rush. -- - Tim G.
