First, get the 1.19 patch. Most people have it by now and you need it to 
play them.

If the game reports a game you are trying to join is closed, the game 
has already started and you can't join. If it says the version is 
outdated, get the 1.19 patch.

Have you tried running kchat and setting up a game. Just start kchat, 
ask if anyone wants to play c&c and when somebody responds ask whether 
they want to start the game or if you should. Then start c&c, go to 
multiplayer and join the other person's game (you will notice there are 
no brackets around his/her name) or start a new one and your opponent 
can join.
